The Baltic sea can be a bit cold for swimming, but the beach itself is nice enough. Not nearly as crowded as, for instance, Palanga in Lithuania, and a lot less drinking on the beach. Ventspils seems to be mainly catering to families, and from the looks of it they will eventually succeed. At least if global warming kicks inn.

Kuldiga is a small but very nice city and the attraction number one - waterfall. Actually this is a small waterfall, I mean not height but long in width. Waterfall goes trough river with beautiful bridge and good view to take some photo shots.

For me, it is number 1 when visiting Liepaja. Well kept park, nice playground, loved the little swan pond. The sea is near the park. Visited this place in january and there were lots of children playing, people doing sports, I think there are lots of people during summer.

I had a tour guide from Karosta Prison take me round the Forts. It was worth having a guide as he was very knowledgeable of the area and had many stories to tell. He pointed out where the Iron Curtain was and also took me underground by candle light which was quite scary and many horror movies came to mind!! It was a great tour. I wouldn't have found out all about the history and explored underground if I had just visited them on my own.

This monumental symbol of both the Orthodox Church and the tsarist monarchy must have been at odds with communist doctrine and no doubt a thorn in the side of the party devout. Finished in 1903 and christened by Nicholas II himself, it served as the garrison’s church much as it did during the Latvian period. The Soviets however used it as a warehouse, gymnasium and meeting hall.
Our second visit to this gorgeous, typically Orthodox Cathedral. The restoration is progressing nicely (I think it's privately funded). Disclosure: a member of my family was an officer in the pre-WWII Latvian Navy; he may have worshipped here. And a note to my fellow tourists: the dress code for Orthodox churches is fairly conservative, but no more so than Catholic and Protestant churches were pre-1970. Not a big deal.

It is unavoidably located, with easy access and parking. If you love history and architecture, you will enjoy the place. There is a small museum inside, it will not take a lot of your time, however you might want to some additional Reading yourself to make sure you are in loop what this place actually represents for historical heritage of region and country. As I told - it will not take too much of your time and later you can have a good meal in nearby restaurant.

Must have excitement for families with children for sure! You'll spend lots of hours there. Safe place for children to run, to play and to enjoy activities parents could just dream about in childhood.
Weakest point could be luck of a good public bistro there, but strongly recommended to visit Diana store by foot not far away from park, on second floor of store is great and cheap bistro with great meal variety.
Children are always happy visiting the Ventspils children town.

There is only guided tour, but this is not a problem. You can choose from two type 1) informational tour 2) experience tour. We took informational tour. Angry lady came and tried to act as jail guard, but it looked quite silly. During the tour, we were said that this is NOT A PRISON, but they called it prison, so it will be easier for tourists to know it. Also, when lady was talking about penalties for imprisoned people, she said it with pride and joy. which was quite strange. Also, lady got to know, that people rights is not a good idea. Very bid disappointment as some more historical facts and figures could make it quite interesting tour. Also tone and outfit of lady should be changed.

when you hear museum you think of serious stuff! this one was in the nature, with games that anyone at any age could enjoy! you could even have fun in the "things" (ex. houses, boats etc.) that were exhibited there!! I had great time and the fun of my life with everything there!! Even with the trees in the park!! :D the most exciting it was the mill.. and of course the train that get you around the park and the small forest!
