We are a volunteer run heritage railway established in 1997 and open to the public since 2011. We are open at weekends from 10 am - 4pm and admission is free with charges for train rides and some special events. Train operate on selected weekends from Easter to October with dates published on our website. The site has a small museum, shop selling a wide range of items including Bachmann, Peco, Gibsons Puzzles and Countryside Books. We run a small cafe in a vintage buffet car which serves drinks and snacks at weekends and offers a range of snacks, panini toasties and tray bakes on operating days and special events. We have operational industrial steam and diesel locomotives with a range of heritage rolling stock. We also house 910 from the National Collection which is a static exhibit.
This attraction is a non profit making company and is part of our railway heritage which is run by volunteers. We actually only met one volunteer who made us most welcome with his wealth of knowledge. I am not a railway buff but I did...MoreThank you for taking the time to visit us during the winter when we are doing maintenance work. We look forward to seeing you again in the summer.

Quirky gift shop, with rooms and staircases all over the place with a wide selection of gifts, clothing, jewellery and household items, all of good quality.
Great self-service cafe too with hot drinks and delicious cakes - prices excellent and works on an honesty principle, which is a very refreshing change!

Enjoyed our visit here - the staff were friendly and the ice cream was nice enough - not 'amazing' - think the location and the weather elevates ones' experience of the ice cream, but the two certainly go well together... a happy visit.

My grandchildren never tire of Platform 3: they'd be there every day if they could. There's lots to do, from a ball pool for little kids to the brilliant soft play area for older children. The play area is quite large compared to some I've seen, always clean and lots to do. There's also a great outdoor play area for when its not raining, with good selection of sit-and-rides for younger children. For grown-ups there's good, freshly made snack food and nice coffee and tea, which you can enjoy while lounging in one of the huge leather sofas or sitting a little more formally at the tables. There also seems to be an abundance of Reading material, so you can wile away the time while your little darling's amuse themselves

Lake District Guided Walking is approved and recommended by the Kirkby Stephen 'Walkers are Welcome Scheme'
An excellent introduction to the Lake District and fell walking. Richard's suggestion of the route proved spot on. His excellent knowledge of the area and conditions meant that we had a splendid day out. The views were magnificent and the walk was well-suited to our abilities. If you have only one day and you want to be sure of getting the most out of it, get in touch with Richard.

We teach people to paraglide here in the UK and also on Trips abroad. You can learn as a complete beginner on a taster day and progress through the BHPA syllabus to Club Pilot Level with us in the UK on our local hills. We also train students in many different locations in the Sunshine.
What an amazing day, we had the best fun possible, the guides were great and clearly were so experienced at flying and teaching people to do it. They take it at your pace so you never have to do anything above your ability and willingness, and to make things even easier they are all called Pete!!
Couldn't recommend this enough. Thanks for the experience

What a brilliant picturesque nature walk taking in the fantastic Smardale Viaduct and Scandal Beck/Gill. The walk is quite easy, partly along the old railway track and there are great views over Howgills and from Nettle Hill. Although there isn't as much wildlife in the winter it is still well worth a stroll in the Cumbria countryside. Don't forget your camera and binoculars. Oh, and if you didn't know it is free to the public.

The Nateby Inn is a country pub that offers a warm welcome a friendly smile we also offer a good range of cask beers a food menu with something that's bound to tickle your fancy. with amazing views from our beer garden overlooking the rolling hills of Cumbria . Trust us you will never want to leave.
Visited with friends for meal. Landlady rude from the outset. More interested in chatting to friend at the bar rather than servicing customers. Struggled to cope with as few as 3 tables. Beer rubbish and only one real ale on. I suspect that the cash flow is so low she can't afford to replenish stock - several items not available. Potentially lovely pub in a great village. Food is very good and the chef deserves to be represented front of house by someone who has experience in hospitality as opposed to what he has which is a rude amateur.

Everything was organised for us through happy days and they made the whole day stress free and fun. Defo get in touch with happy days if your looking for things to do in the lakes. They’re super friendly and full of great ideas. I’d definitely be recommending this experience with any one looking for a fun day out in and around the Kirby Stephen area.
