Monnickendam (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌmɔnɪkənˈdɑm]) is a Town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Waterland, and lies on the coast of the IJsselmeer, about 8 km (5.0 mi) southeast of Purmerend. It received city rights in 1355 and suffered a lot of damage during the fires of 1500 and 1513.

Tourist Information Waterland gives you information about all the towns in Waterland, for example Marken, Broek in Waterland and Monnickendam, what to do and see in these towns and sells hiking-, biking- and sailingmaps.
Useful tourist information in a wonderful little town. Near the old center and locks. This town has many surprises. Well worth a visit especially if you want to escape the hustle and rough side of Amsterdam.

I was really impressed with this small museum telling the story of this ancient settlement - the rise and fall (and rise) of Monnikendam. There are also natural history displays and a wonderful coillection of old clocks on the top floor - make sure to be there on the hour to hear all manner of bells, cuckoos, chimes.. Don't miss the chance to hear the gramophone from 1900 - for 10 cents you can hear it play (holes punched in a huge tin 'record').
The exhibit descriptions are in Dutch and English and the informative films are sub-titled in English. There is a very nice free brochure in Dutch, English, German French and Spanish - well done de Speeltoren!

Perfectly lovely old church with original interior finishes. A VERY crooked building on the side. Worth a look. Across the road is a memorial to three British bombers and crews which crashed during the War. Wellington and Lancaster

A wonderful day of sailing on board of a tjalk, a Dutch sailing barge. Enjoy the sailing and visit the dutch villages like Volendam, Marken, Monnickendam and Edam.
Monnickendam is another of the Waterland towns which we were able to visit with our Waterland day card bus ticket. It was a pretty little town and there is a small museum with a bell tower where we watched the inner workings of the carillon when it chimed at 4 pm. Our Museumkaart was accepted.

Monnickendam is a cute and quiet village where I enjoyed strolling in the streets and along the canals, the harbours, the former walls, but it is not a place of great interest for architecture, nothing exceptional. Edam is much better, Hoorn remains my favourite, followed by Enkhuizen.
Monninckendam is a good excursion for people who want to relax from busy thriving Amsterdam. Many busses go there from Central Station on their way to Marken, Volendam, Edam.

Be aware of the road/path markings as cycles have priority over pedestrians if you wonder onto their pathway (red) as my wife found out when she face planted a cyclist on the floor by stepping in the way (by mistake) the lady was so apologetic and cycled off in embarrassment but it made my wife nervous thereafter, the roads are easy to negotiate if you look the right way (left) the layouts are similar to “footpath / Cycle Path / Vehicles / Tram / Tram / Vehicles / Cycle Path / Footpath” when a wide road.
