In one of the largest civil engineering works undertaken anywhere in the world during the 20th century, what was once a sea called the Zuiderzee, was turned into a combination of reclaimed land called polders and a huge lake, now known as the IJsselmeer. To fully appreciate the scale of this project, drive into town, first through the Flevoland polder to Lelystad. Then the approach to this beautiful town is via the 30-kilometer (19-mile) long dyke. You will not get a better impression of the scale of the work that took place. You first drive through mile after mile of reclaimed land, then on a road that goes right over the 'sea', with water on both sides. Enkhuizen itself was once one of the main operational bases of the East India Company (VOC). The town today is a water lovers' paradise. Boats abound; at times, every second street seems to be a canal. The Zuiderzeemuseum here has both an inside and outside section. It is devoted to the history of the Zuiderzee and the cultural heritage of the town.

While on business in Enkhuizen myself and my colleagues stumbled upon this restaurant by chance. It is centrally located, the interior is comfortable, the staff friendly and the food is excellent! The meat and fish is fresh and really well cooked. The mixed meats dish is definitely worth a try. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were happy to change parts of the dish to suit our requirements.
In terms of price you pay €19 for a main dish and €9 for a starter, not bad given how good the food is! The portions are a good size too!
Well worth a visit.

The location is great, close near the museum, view on the waterfront all really very nice.
The restaurant decoration is in line with the location, nice and very friendly atmosphere.
And as to the food...., "Uitsmijter" a bit salty, probably because of the cheese they used.
The pulled pork burger, not fresh, but heated (from cold) so taste has gone.
Great coffee !

The atmosphere is welcoming, with a traditional feel, old maps and artefacts decorate the room.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, choosing off the set menu. Service was efficient and pleasant.
We had a really tasty amuse bouche, then for starters a tasty seafood salad and a fish terrine with delicious seafood sauce. Then steaks, which were flavoursome and well cooked. For dessert there was a lovely cheesecake with berries and caramel.
Thoroughly recommend

We arrived without a booking and were lucky to get a table. The atmosphere was pleasant, with plenty of people enjoying their meals.
We ordered Carpaccio of Beef and Duck Ballotine for starters, then both had an unusual dish which included both Plaice and Halibut, it made a lot of the different qualities of the fish and had a good sauce of chanterelles. It was very effective.
We had desserts, the Nougat Ice Cream and Lemon Tart (which was more like a cheesecake).
This was one of the best meals of the whole holiday.

I had the mixed grill plate. Came with small portions of baby back rib, black angus steak, chicken and chicken sate with fries. I also had a bowl of mushroom soup.
The meats are grilled slightly on the dry side but seasoning is good. As such, I consider the food as average.
Perhaps all dutch folks are friendly, the waitress and waiters are friendly but service is slow.
This restaurant is considered popular as it has a larger crowd than other restaurants.

Since 1972, our cozy restaurant housed in an old warehouse, and is decorated with many maritime attributes and ship-models. From our restaurant you have a wonderful view over the old port and the Drommedaris. You can lunch or dine in a maritime atmosphere. Our Terrace on the water is worth a visit for a delicious lunch or an intimate dinner on a sultry summer evening. Our restaurant is ideal for small and large groups up to 160 people. At your request we would be happy to send you a price estimate for your dinner, party or lunch. We can compose a package for you for any occasion.
We had mussels in white wine and they were absolutely delicious! Also the other plates we saw passing by looked good and the waiters and waitresses were friendly and helpful. The Terrace next to the harbour is very nice to sit on, but inside the restaurant there also is a good atmosphere. There are small ship models everywhere. When you visit Enkhuizen, this is a nice place to go!

Great restaurant with enough vegetarian options for our party. The decor and old school charm of the restaurant is quite amazing and welcoming.
The bar was laid out with magazines to read and also seemed very inviting.
The restaurant was warm and our seats near the window were quite nice to watch people walk by.
The food itself was thoroughly enjoyed by all 4 people in our party. I had lambsfillet which i was expecting something like Lamb in a milanese style, but instead it was a like lamb chunks (boneless) in a stroganoff sauce. It was amazing. It was sideded with cous cous and some seasoned pita bread. All were completely fantastic.
For the four of us, including some wine, it came out to 79 euro. Not bad.

We ate here on a Sunday night in May because it was one of the few places open in Enkhuizen but were pleasantly suprised with our meal. As English residents in the Netherlands we often find getting an exciting restaurant meal a challenge here, but the menu in Onder de Wester was very varied. There were several fish dishes, as well as stuffed lamb, steak and two vegetarian options. Disappoiningly of these only the vegetarian curry was available as the Linzertorte which my partner wanted to try was sold out. I chose a spicy chicken tagine with seasonal vegetables, which came in a traditional tagine pot. This was served with rice rather than coucous, but the tagine itself had plenty of juicy chicken in it, as well as lots of peppers, chick peas, beans, courgettes and roasted carrots. As his veggie choice was not available my partner chose several items from the tapas menu, which seemed to be a popular choice thoughout the restaurant judging from other tables. The blue cheese dish with brandy soaked fried apple slices seemed to go down a treat. We shared a Portugese orange cake with orange sorbet for dessert which was really good. The only complaint about the restaurant was that the wine choice was very limited. There was no wine list and when asked what white wines they had we were just told they would bring us some to try. Basically we were just brought two bottles of very basic house wines and told to choose between them. A bit more choice would have been good, particularly as they seemed to do a reasonable number of beers. Friendly staff and the good food mean that I still gave the place a good rating however, and I would definitely return.

We are great full to help you and give you a great experience in our beautiful town of Enkhuizen. Sitting on our heated Terrace, near the water, beautiful view on the harbour , you never want to leave anymore.
I had lunch here yesterday with my boyfriend. Decor is not my thing but goes with the name, smells a bit funky and the music is terrible Service is quick and staff is friendly. Both had a Sandwich. I ordered the one with goat cheese and my boyfriend the one with tuna salad. I liked mine but he didn't like his,it had olives and he doesn't eat olives. So when the waitress came to ask if we were enjoying everything. We told her about his Sandwich. She immediately asked if he wanted to change the order,so he did. His Sandwich with carpaccio came really fast and he enjoyed it. The waitress was really friendly about it and we didn't have to pay for the one with tuna. A suggestion, put on the menu what is in the tuna salad to avoid this from happening.

We rode our bikes from Hoorn to Enkhuizen and stopped in here for lunch. Such beautiful views from this cafe, plenty to choose from on the menu and very relaxing watching all the boats in the harbour. Service was excellent, very friendly staff who also spoke very good English. They were interested in our travels and we left after a lovely stop with our tummies full and relaxed. Plenty of room to park your bikes, or you can come by train as the trains arrive at the platforms and then the Railway station cafe is in front of you.
