What an enjoyable little town! Very easy to walk and the Palazzo della Corgna is worth the price of admission. Enjoyed the art. Some Picassos that were quite interesting and interesting Etruscan pieces. The town offers a handful or three of restaurants and shops with nice selections of local foods. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

We went to Petrignano where we found the spot where St. Margaret of Cortona found her calling after discovering her lover had been murdered. The story goes that one day, Margaret’s lover left to check his property. When he did not return that evening, she became very worried. After a couple of days, her lover’s favorite dog returned to the castle without him. Pulling at her dress and Barking, the dog persuaded Margaret to follow it to the pile of sticks and dirt that formed her lover’s makeshift grave. He had been beaten to death and hastily buried in the woods. Upon seeing her lover’s broken body, Margaret underwent a total spiritual conversion. She blamed herself for his death, and immediately set out to do public penance for her sins. On the spot where this took place is a small church and a plaque on a tree.

My wife and I and our 28 year old daughter and her significant other showed up at the Leuta doorstep around 4PM on a Tuesday afternoon. the owner, Denis Zeni, was just wrapping up a previous tour and tasting--immediately after which he focused his attention on us. After a thorough tour of the small and boutique winery we sat down and tasted 6 of his limited supply wines (4 for 10 euros; 6 for 20--the last two were expensive wines). We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I like wine, and his (from Malbec to Merlot and Sangiovese to Cab Franc--and blends) were of a very high quality. I ended up joining his wine club and look forward to receiving 2 cases per year for the foreseeable future.

Caught the 'water bus' from Tuoro direct to the island. Very peaceful and felt like stepping into a different pace of life. We ate in a pizzeria overlooking the lake, beautiful views and surprisingly good value for money. It's a steep climb up to the top of the island but worth it for the stunning views if you go on a clear day. We wandered around for a couple of hours exploring some of the historical buildings and ruins before rewarding ourselves with some well earned gelato!

Aka Palazzo Ducale. Next to (and sharing a ticket with) the Rocca del Leone fortress that you do have listed, but they need to be referenced separately; they are two very different attractions.
What a wonderful introduction to Umbria is Castiglione del Lago: great shops, lovely dining, shimmering green water (4th largest inland body in Italy), dramatic mountain vistas framing all, and what has to be oe of the greatest combination ticket deals on the continent at E5 pp: for so well preserved castle, a Palace cum terrific museum, and most impressive passageway between the two.
Be prepared to spend a good amount of time more than we imagineded would be appropriate for our schedule. This was supposed to be a quickie with Montalcino the feature of the day akin to most memorable Montepulciano. In our estimation, the caboose reversed its role and blew the locomotive off the tracks!

This is the chapel built where St. Margaret received her calling to the religious life. It is a small chapel which was locked when we arrived. However, we could look thru the windows to see it.

Come visit Avignonesi, where our motto is "terroir speaks; we listen." Visit our cellars, taste our wines, talk to our people, learn about the philosophy behind our winemaking. Please contact us by email with any questions. Reservations are necessary for tours but not to taste our wines and make your purchases in our Cellar Door!
My partner and I did a tasting and tour at Avignonese and we had some great wines that you can get for a great deal.
Wwe originally found out about this particular winery through a great Italian restaurant in Washington DC, and they sold some of their "50/50" wine in the restaurant. Normally we don't go to wineries when they export to the United States, but Avignonese is making some of the best wines in the Montepulciano area and is definitely worth a visit.
The winery tour was fine and pretty standard. Once you've been to a few you've basically been to all of them, but they do have an interesting process for producing and drying out the Vin Santo that they sell.
The tasting was very premium, and included all of their hits. The main benefit of going directly to the winery is that the shipping price is very low and they sell at very good prices compared to US wine shop markups.
