Perhaps best known these days as the setting for the book and movie “Under the Tuscan Sun,” gorgeous hillside Cortona has a long history dating back even before its time as an important Etruscan center. Top attractions include the Duomo (Cathedral), the small Museo Diocesano across the piazza with its superb art collection, and the fascinating Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca with its assembly of Etruscan and Roman era items. Cortona is also bursting with splendid churches spanning many periods.

Since 1994 Osteria del Teatro welcomes you with politeness and professionalism, offering typical Tuscan cuisine with a selection of tasty dishes. It is a restaurant in Cortona, Italy, charming and genuine, owned by Emiliano Rossi, experienced and friendly chef. For a good lunch in Cortona or a romantic dinner visit our restaurant to discover the exquisite Cortona cooking pleasures! Our restaurant trattoria in Cortona allows you to enjoy tasty and sought-after dishes from Cortona in a unique setting: a 6th century building totally renovated and restored to original splendor. Three different settings welcome you in an elegant and very exclusive atmosphere: the first room reclaiming the typical features of the ancient inns of Tuscany, the second is characterized by a cozy contest, the third is enriched by precious frescoes which make your dinner or your lunch in Cortona intimate and romantic
Meeting friends coming from various directions, we chose Osteria del Teatro for lunch. Good choice. While hours are limited, it is worth the wait for lunch and my favorite pasta in all of Cortona. Great wine selection too, and our waiter recommended an excellent local Syrah. My pasta filled with pear and ricotta, with a pear and walnut sauce, was yummy. Enjoy!

Booking heavily recommended! Note: Opens at 7.30pm, no lunch, closed on Mondays.
What a great place. Average looking from the outside, based on a main road, you'd be forgiven for driving past. Don't.
We booked on a recommendation and at 8pm on a Sunday night in mid-September saw people sent away. Locals came to collect takeaway pizzas.
Nice looking inside with friendly and helpful staff (one helped an older lady with her lobster) that speak good English.
We said we would share a gnocchi so it came split in 2 bowls - so helpful - and was more than enough...we'd have struggled to eat one each.
With a pizza each (Napoli style means a slightly thicker base and a wetter sauce), a mixed salad, 1 water and 1 beer (all delicious!) we paid 29 euros. Such a bargain.
Will be visiting again before we leave the area.

We have been coming here for a few years now, always welcoming, efficient, friendly & most importantly supply delicious food.
Also when you don't want a full Italian meal with all the courses, this offers some lighter more snacks type options.
This visit we enjoyed orange & smoked salmon ravioli, so delicious, words don't do it justice, all washed down with a nice bottle of Rose wine, & good espresso. We also enjoyed Aperol spritz on another day & this was accompanied by an assortment of nibbles, again just perfect.
Give it a try whatever you choose it will be good

My husband & I loved this restaurant in 2015 & returned this year. Once again they did not disappoint! We were wowed!! Incredible food presented beautifully & with so many flavors. They are a class act; from the decor to the welcome glass of prosecco the an amazing meal & after dinner drinks all for a very reasonable price! We were so happy to see Yuli & Tatiana again & have them as our Waitstaff as they too are exceptional! We will be back!!

The best meal we had in Cortona. It's easy to miss this place as it's not showy and the tables are set in an inner courtyard. But do yourself a favor and give it a shot. We had a delicious multi-course meal with steak (cooked perfectly to our directions) and pasta. I loved Grandma's tomato sauce. The chef came out to speak with us and she was delightful--it was her family's recipe. We had a young server who spoke English and was very nice. There are lots of choices in Cortona; we're glad we made this one.

El Commenchero's is a great place to enjoy trueTuscan food.
We have been often, usually as part of a large group- Boxing Day, festas or gatherings to celebrate birthdays or other events and always we have had a marvellous experience.
First the food- Excellent and genuine tuscan fare cooked by Signora Caneschi and her son Jan- Carlo. Always lots of food and always great
Wine- their local wine is very drinkable
Service- Friendly and very good
Franco Caneschi is the genuine Italian cowboy he dresses up for each luncheon. He serves on table with his son Andrea and other children; he often brings in a hunting Owl or other animal which oversees proceedings and finally he serves Grappa at the end of the meal from a glass rifle and form glasses "drawn" from a huge ammunition belt!!!!
Overall, every visit is an exceptional experience one not to be missed if visiting Cortona

In mythology, ambrosia is the food or the drink of the gods. From this I was inspired to give the name to my restaurant.I want my customers when eat the food cooked by me in a place with unique atmosphere and accompanied by the sound of running water behind them, with the Etruscan well, they feel special, like gods.To achieve this ambitious goal requires care and attention to every details, not only in the kitchen, trying to honor our tradition and at the same time knowing how to be innovative.Tradition and innovation are the basis for the construction of my restaurant since the renovation of an ancient property with its history and its remarkable passages then would become Restaurant Ambrosia. We've uncovered many elements hidden by time (the arches, the inner well and the beautiful stone wall with a fall of rain-fed), but at the same time we used the best materials and modern components to ensure high level services.Combination of tradition and innovation has also guided the choice of menu. This is divided into two parts, one with typical preparation, related to the area where I was born and raised, and one with with a cooking full of imagination, innovation and provocation.I think it's duty of every chef know how to prepare dishes that are part of the context in which they were born and raised, but at the same time to test changes on these bases."A classic dish with a little touch of fantasy becomes a dish unique that only you can find in THAT restaurant, cooked in THAT way, according to the fancy of THAT Chef."
Ristorante Ambrosia is a short walk from the centre of Cotton's but worth the 7 minute stroll. It's got a very quirky and attractive but compact interior, with an impressive water feature! The star attraction though is the food. The menu is original and inspired, very well prepared and presented. The service was attentive and contained several moments of surprise from the complimentary glass of prosecco, the amuse bouche, rosemary popcorn, delicious homemade bread, small biscuit and meringue samples whilst paying the bill. Overall, excellent value and great food and service.

An upmarket Agriturismo with restaurant, in a peaceful setting near Cortona. We are reviewing both at the same time. The restaurant is wonderful, the accommodation less so, hence a "very good" rather than excellent, which the restaurant does deserve.
This was a convenient one night stop not far from the autostrada. It is well known for the high standard of food and wine that is served in their restaurant. Although surrounded by fields, it’s far from rustic, the accommodation is in a traditional Tuscan Land Owner’s house. The furnishings are also "very traditional" and although we stayed just one night we were given an apartment with a huge walk in shower.
The Gardens are stunningly beautiful and the whole place appeared well cared for with lots of shaded places to sit and relax. A week here would be enjoyable especially if you are visiting Cortona. If you can’t stay here then book a table to have dinner, which in summer is served in the garden. About €200 Bed and Dinner for two.
