We went in this sauna facility while making a proper reservation well in advance. We had a good experience in the sauna, turkish bath and swimming pool. The facilities were good though the staff attitude was far from friendly. This attitude was not friendly, not the hostipitably as one would expect in Friesland and was rather hostile instead. We were corrected on the fact that meals were to be consumed only in batting robes, that no emails were to be checked while being in the restaurant area. Apart from that please be aware that there is a weekend surplus on the prices. All in all this turned out to be a far more expensive routing than expected. Therefore please check and check again the small print.

This Catholic church is almost a century old and dominates St. Nicolaasga. As 16th century religious relics are present in the church, the St. Nicolaaskerk has been designed a National Monument. Remarkable is the replica of the Lourdes Cave, reduced to 1 : 10 scale, in the church grounds. Plan your visit to the church carefully if you wish to see the relics. As usual in the Netherlands, the church is closed most of the time.

A unique experience in a unique location ! Neptunus is the perfect location to explore the Frisian lakes. For this, we let Falcons (max. 5 persons per boat), surf sets and Lasers for the sailors and luxury boats (2 to 6 persons) for those wishing to quietly enjoy the beautiful Frisian lakes. For you as an individual or as a group, we can arrange a day full of Water Sports. We're happy to discuss your wishes for a great experience!
Neptunus is the best zeilschool in Nederland! I have been bringing my students here since 2010. The staff is outstanding, the facilities are rustic but well maintained; and being updated all the time. The sailing equipment is up to date and very well maintained. From the moment my students arrive until the moment they re-board the buses to go home I know that my students have been well cared for and have had a wonderful educational week. The staff accommodates all our requests and is really great when dealing with special dietary needs and restrictions. The best recommendation I can give is that parents and students look forward to this trip more than any other trip that we do with our students.

Having been to a few maritime museums around the world this one rates among the very best. With a very local ( Friesland) focus it documents the regions maritime history with a vast array of exhibits from old barge interiors, to barge owners home styles and decoration, sailing vessels of every kind including a huge range of traditional skujtse sailboats. Too much to see so leave plenty of time and for 6 euros entry its a bargain and you get......more than you bargained for!

Because we were in the neighbourhoud and it was raining "cats and dogs" we decided to visit the Museum Belvedere. Excellent architecture which blends into the landscape with a permanent collection with the emphasis on Friesland artists. This makes the museum special because nowhere in the Netherlands you can see a collection like this one

De Schiffart is one of the few if not the only yacht charters that rents out high speed RIB boats. Such a monopoly would make many companies arrogant but the opposite is true here
The staff is friendly, hospitable and efficient. The boats are in a perfect state.
My son and I rented a 70 hp RIB today that does some 30 knots and it was a joy. We will be returning here many times!
P.S. Apart from RIBs they also rent out motor yachts but I haven't tries those yet

Ir. D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station The D.F. Woudagemaal in the town of Lemmer is the world's largest steam pumping station still in working condition. The pumping station was opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina for the purpose of pumping excess water from Friesland into the Zuyder Zee, the present-day IJsselmeer. The imposing brick building is austere and functional, in line with the architectural style of the Amsterdam School. In 1966, the electrically driven J.L. Hoogland pumping station in Stavoren took over the task of the steam pumping station in Lemmer. And yet, even today, the historic D.F. Woudagemaal plays a crucial role in extreme conditions. In cases of extremely high water, the old steam pumping station is deployed to drain excess water into the IJsselmeer as quickly as possible. The D.F. Woudagemaal has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998.
For those that love the old technique of steam engines and big water pumps this is a great visit. The newly built visitor center offers a very good insight into the workings an history of this monument.

Great tour guided by Kayak Tjonger Tours. We started at restaurant/hotel "De Tjonger Vallei" and peddled across the Tjeukemeer towards the delightful river "De Tjonger". Experiencing nature from a kayak feels like moving through a beautiful living Dutch landscape painting. Upon arriving at the Tjeukemeer, we witnessed Great Cormorants from a distance of less than 1 meter! Other birds we spotted included falcons, ducks and different kinds of geese. Although my experience with kayaking is limited, this 2.5 hour tour was easy to do and very much fun. The company offers different routes, so that the level of activity can be adjusted according to the desire of the participants. I highly recommend this tour to everybody who loves nature and would like to see it from a different perspective.

Museum Joure is composed of beautiful historical warehouses, residential homes and factories. The ten buildings are surrounded by quays and a museum garden. Discover everything about the history of coffee, tea and the Dutch corporation Douwe Egberts. One of the buildings once was the first factory of Dutch coffee manufacturer. On the 19th century terrain are, among others, workshops of gold and silver smiths, a clock maker and a coppersmith. In the exhibition area of the museum contemporary art is displayed. In July and August every Tuesday and Thursday is about demonstrations. Several craftsman and machines are shown in action (from 13.30-16.30).
This museum advertises itself as a museum that shows the history of DE. However, except for one machine from DE nothing has to do with this coffee and tea business. Furthermore, the museum is quite small, and doesn't have a lot on exhibition.
Don't expect much of the old-fashioned shop, if you would like to buy old school sweets visit the sweets shop in the Zuiderzee museum.
