As a local, it was fantastic to access otherwise private off-road tracks and locations around Purbeck. We learned so much that we didn't already know - local nuclear reactors; oil wealth in Dorset; historical political Acts that went wrong (!) and the huge impact on people. All put into local context by Gary, and peppered with humour and personal anecdotes. Really excellent knowledge and commentary - plus fab refreshments (thanks Carol!)
Highly recommended.

Two delightful hours spent strolling around Weymouth Harbour.
We were surrounded by beautiful views, a wealth of independent shops, (including a superb, friendly record store that sells coffee and surprise ephemera), cafes and restaurants.
You can walk for 10mins or up to 2 or 3 hours, depending on how far you want to stroll. It's pretty, clean, very well-kept, friendly, accessible and free.
We loved it!

Weymouth Beach

Weymouth's crescent-shaped sand & shingle beach is just fantastic. Clean and spacious, the water is safe for youngsters to play in because it's very shallow.
(Back in the 70s, I used to skidboard here at low tide - perfect conditions.)
The beach is backed by a superb Promenade, around which cafes, bars and restaurants abound. The East end is pretty quiet, while Westwards becomes busier, merging into the town with fantastic independent eateries and shops, the Pier, the Harbour and beyond.
Weymouth is a great place to visit, either just for a day, or a week or so. So much to do, and surrounded by extraordinary coastline and countryside. We love it!

Nothe Fort

This 19th century Fort includes a museum highlighting coastal defence. Built by the Victorians to protect Portland Harbour, Nothe Fort is one of the best preserved forts of its kind. The advances in technology that affected the fort are explained through many displays, exhibits and audio visual facilities located on the ramparts, gun decks and maze of underground passageways. Enjoy the stunning and far reaching views of the Jurassic Coast from the picnic areas on the Ramparts. These will provide one of the best vantage points on the south coast.

A memorable pebble beach. I would recommend going across to Portland at the pub which is actually on the pebble beach approx 200 yards from the causeway exit.
The setting is fantastic and the sound of the pebbles being washed up and then running back down the beech to the waters edge is something to behold - ultimate tranquillity.

St Catherine's Chapel

This is a really nice place to visit. The walk from the village is only half a mile and although part is uphill, it is not very steep a walk over a meadow.
The view from the top is superb, overlooking the sea, the village and the coastal path.
The Chapel itself is just a shell, nice to look at from the outside but nothing of interest inside unfortunately.
However, it is well worth a stroll to the Chapel for the view alone -plus some gentle exercise!

We come here often all times of teh year, crabbing in the summer & swimming & walking over the winter months, be nice if dogs could be let off their leads from September although there is a big area they can go off when you walk up the big hill. Lovely place a must see if you're in Weymouth.

Portland Plateau

A varied 4.7 mile walk classed as Moderate along the South West Coast Path as it heads along the east coast of Portland, passing great scenery, historical forts and old quarry workings. Many of the paths around Portland Bill are accessible for powered wheelchair users and rugged pushchairs. The first ½ mile of this route follows a level wide path, but after this becomes more varied with some steep and uneven sections before reaching Church Ope Cove. From the cove to Portland Heights the path is relatively level apart from one steep climb.

This is an amazing place. You can get right to the edge of the cliffs and feel the awesome effects of the waves crashing against the rocks and shaping the sedimentary rocks.
You can see the sea shells embedded in the layers and witness the erosion of the waves. The lighthouse is open and there are toilets and a cafe. The obelisk perches precarious on the edge of the cliff and is an ideal photo opportunity. We thoroughly enjoyed clambering over the rocks and taking numerous photos of waves splashing high up into the air. Well worth a visit.

Sandsfoot Castle

Reviewed By Tambomariner - Weymouth, United Kingdom

Here a visitor can see the whole of Portland Harbour from well laid out Gardens together with many sailing craft and visiting tourist carrying craft taking passengers from berths in Weymouth Harbour. An excellent view of Portland is always available showing both the Harbour and inshore locations of two prisons. The Island of Portland is connected by a road causeway that once carried a Railway connection to Southwell. There has been a major development on one of the Jetties which can cater for the very largest passenger cruise liners. The water is always clear and blue. Sandsfoot Castle is a safe ruin but climbing is not recommended. On a clear day visibility allows sight of the Coastline from St Alban's Head and westwards towards Start Point and Dartmouth.
