Knysna stands out on South Africa's famed Garden Route thanks to the sandstone cliffs that dramatically separate its tranquil lagoon from the pounding surf of the Indian Ocean. It's also home to the country's largest indigenous forest. Hop aboard a ferry for a ride through the scenic highlights. The Millwood Mines at Jubilee Creek, site of a major gold rush in 1885, provide a picturesque spot for a picnic. Be sure to try some local oysters during the renowned annual festival.

We rented a car in Capetown and drove the Garden route for a 9 day stay. This was the perfect amount of time to do this route justice. Out stops were Franschhoek, Prince Albert, Oudtshoorn, Sedgefield, and Plettenberg bay. Going through the Swartberg pass was incredible. To really appreciate the contrast in scenery you must not be rushed. Take you time and enjoy the drive.

I read many reviews of the Heads, rating the place as Excellent.
Unfortunately, when we visited there the weather was not great. It was foggy, the sky were grey so we could not enjoy the scenery that is supposed to be beautiful.
We also had a boat ride that was a waste of time on such weather.
Therefore, if the weather is bad - skip it. When the weather is nice, based on Reading others' reviews and seeing pictures - should visit.

Brenton-on-Sea is great for walking and sunbathing and is popular with paragliders. A big rock formation, castle Rock, is a favourite fishing spot for locals. Swimming is dangerous because of rip currents.
A must if you are in the area. Lovely drive up the hills and down to the coast. The beach stretches all the way to Buffels Bay about 3 to 4 miles so you can walk all the way round , have some lunch and walk back. The beach is so quiet and easy to walk on.

We love Gerickers Point, the long walk to those wonderful rock pool at low tide - been doing this since I was a child- or simply strolling along this unspoiled beach gives me inner sole an energy infusion! Unfortunately we are the recipient of the world of plastic junk - please take a bag when you enjoy this majesty piece of coastline to help elevate the increasing deluge of worldly waste!

Founded in 1994, The Knysna Elephant Park was the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. The first orphaned calves (from a culling operation in the Kruger National Park) named Harry and Sally, after the famous movie of the time, remain part of the KEP family today: Harry as the dominant bull and Sally as the matriarch of the herd. Since 1994, we have cared for and raised more than thirty elephants. These animals include relocated animals, orphaned calves, elephants rescued from culls and ex-circus animals. Some have become part of the KEP herd, others have moved onto other reserves and facilities in the Western and Eastern Cape, taking in to cognizance their personalities, bonds with other animals and welfare needs. The present KEP herd numbers nine - the largest domesticated matriarchal herd in the country. Your elephant encounter begins starts in our Interpretation Centre where you are introduced to our elephants, through beautiful photographic and informative displays. Here you can also book an elephant-back ride, a sunrise walk with the elephants or special exclusive sundowner tour. A short video presentation gives you further insight into the Park and its elephant-orientated Missions and goals, before you enter the Park to meet the elephants. Our facilities are world class and our style of management ensures that our elephants interact with guests on their own terms. Within this habitat, we call a "controlled, free-range" environment, our daily tours offer guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with our elephants; but still gives the elephants to some freedom and choice. Guests may remain with the elephants as long as they wish, before being transported back to the Restaurant and Curio Shop. A Photography Department is also available for guests to purchase personalized photos and DVD's of their Extraordinary Elephant Encounter - making your memories last a lifetime! Our newly refurbished night quarters consist of a large covered elephant boma, which leads into an outdoor fenced camp. For an animal that can eat for up to 18 hours a day, this arrangement allows our elephants to exhibit a large variety of behaviours during the night. They are able to choose where they want to sleep - indoors or outdoors; who they want to interact with, as well as where and what they want to eat. This again contributes to one of the highest quality captive elephant management styles in South Africa. Our elephant boma and night camp are viewed from above by our Elephant Lodge guests, another first for South Africa...nowhere else in the country can you 'sleep' with elephants The need for research was recognized by The Knysna Elephant Park who then created the African Elephant Research Unit (AERU, est. 2009), aimed at improving the management and welfare of captive elephants throughout South Africa. Visitors to the park are privileged to have a close-up and personal encounter with these gentle giants, and leave having gained a healthy respect for these wonderful animals, as well as a better understanding of the African elephant and their plight across the continent. EXTRAORDINARY ENCOUNTERS - BE TOUCHED BY AN ELEPHANT
What an opportunity to get up close to these amazing creatures. The park is predominantly for rehabilitating elephants and they have free access to roam although they are obviously used to crowds visiting especially when they see the food buckets!
You get a short information video before travelling in a trailer to see the elephants. Each small group has a dedicated guide to keep you and the elephants safe. He was very knowledgeable and helpful.
You get the opportunity to feed and touch the elephants and have your photo with them.
You can stay as long as you like but must be in a group.
Back at the reception there is a small cafe and a gift shop. The gift shop was a little disappointing with poor quality products and I felt they missed a fundraising opportunity there.
Various tours available but we just did the basic one.

Wild Oats is a local farmers and food market open every Saturday morning until 12 noon. We are located on the western outskirts of Sedgefield at the turnoff to Sedgefield Island. An award winning Garden Route landmark we are not to be confused with the Scarab Craft Market to the far east of Engen Petrol Station or the Mosaic Flea Market across the road from Wild Oats. As a food market, our open times are limited due to the short shelf-life of many of our LOCALLY PRODUCED products which include: Free-range chicken, beef, pork and lamb, free-range eggs, multiple cheese, dairy and baked products including fresh gouda, Cheddar, blue-cheeses... milk, fresh fish, fruits, free-range & organic vegetables in season, many traditional and exotic bottled goods, organic olives, berries, rusks, koeksisters, biltong & wors, famous artisan breads, award-winning cheesecakes and goats cheeses... and on and on and on. Also a fabulous range of hot-off-the-grill breakfasts, coffees, teas and fresh-squeeze juices and smoothies. FOOD HEAVEN! Come face-to-face with our local food producers every Saturday morning, come rain or shine.
The market hosts a huge variety of products. On a hunch I stopped to look for Sauerkraut and not only found it, but found Kimchi as well as a wide variety of other probiotic foods. Many fresh veggies, fruits and lovely prepared foods are found as well. The atmosphere is festive with live Performances.

If you had not known there had been significant fires you could have hardly noticed. Knysna has recovered brilliantly. You will of course see blackened trees , whole areas which are now green undergrowth not large trees. House which have burnt down and being rebuilt but nothing that detracts from this wonderful place on the Garden Route that has to be a must in everyone’s visit to South Africa. Great base for walks , Beaches, views. Not far from George, Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay. Many golf courses in the area, SIMOLA, PERZULA, KNYSNA, FANCOURT, GEORGE and GOOSE.

Buffalo Bay is a family beach with safe swimming and great Surfing conditions. It is also ideal for walking (all the way to Brenton on Sea) and fishing.
Buffel's bay is a place mainly for family holidays because there is not any attractions or night life for young people, except for the restaurant with a deck to sit on with a sea view. There are mostly holiday homes and the beach is the main attraction during the day.

Featherbed is a privately-owned, registered Nature Reserve and a South African Heritage Site, No.59. It is a pristine piece of paradise situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is accessible by ferry only.In order to protect the splendour of the natural beauty, access to the Reserve is controlled. Numbers are limited and visits are only permitted in the company of the Reserve's specialist guides.
We were supposed to go on the cruise combined with the nature reserve (4h trip). This was booked in July. Apparently there was a fire which destroyed a big part of the reserve so the tour only consisted of the cruise (1h30). Okay; not your fault but we didn't get any of our money back… our tour included lunch. This was served on the boot; delightful one light think but the ones who didn't book in advance got their food first. So our dish came when we finally arrived at the bay with beautiful viewings. That was the only time the boot was shaking up and down (not handy if you wanna eat). So we left our table just one second to take a pic… and our table was cleared (I didn't even got the chance to finish :( ). So; we were a little disappointed (understatement)

A working art studio where the resident artist engages with visitors , provides demonstrations and gives advice to artists and collectors
Visited on the morning of Heritage Day in September with my teenage daughter while on a road trip. During this trip we went to quite a few studios and galleries and this was the one which really sparked my daughter's interest. Jan was very hospitable,...MoreSo glad you stopped and spent time with me. Hopefully the painting you are interested in is still available! I'm in Vietnam at the moment, however Clive is at the studio Kind regards
