Where to Eat in Franschhoek: The Best Restaurants and Bars

October 30, 2017 Dorsey Hagwood

The village of Franschhoek (French Corner), tucked into the Cape Winelands of South Africa, is known as the country's food and wine capital. Galleries and antique shops fill the tree-lined streets, and vineyards established more than 300 years ago cascade over the hills just outside town. Local activities range from wine-tasting tours to trout fishing and hiking. The Huguenot Memorial Museum honors the town's early settlers, who fled religious persecution in France.

Based on TA reviews we had high hopes and not disappointed
Friendly welcome, small but really interesting menu and great wine list.
Bread, appetiser and starter excellent. Really tasty and presentation!
Then the world stopped!
Waited about 45 minutes for the main course to arrive - which again was lovely when it did.
Then it was as though we had a contagious disease! Sweet menu, coffee and lastly the bill took ages..
I had to find a waiter to get the bill - it was so late by this time they had downed tools and were having a chat at the front of the restaurant
The Chef owner came around and apologised for the delay which means he cared - but it should not have happened
Maybe we were unlucky and the food was superb at a reasonable price so certainly not bad - but let down by the service

I made Reservations before we came to Franschhoek because I didn't want to miss out on this restaurant. The food here was so different from anything we have ever had. I had Grass Fed Beef Striploin Sous-Vide, pressed potato, garlic-ginger-eggplant ragout, and smoked eggplant. My husband had a Kudu Loin, licorice glaze, spiced chocolate puree, smoked beets, radicchio, crispy cavalenero. Both dishes were mouth watering. We saved room for their house specialty which was an Apricot soufflé. It is huge and should be shared.

Monneaux Restaurant ranks among South Africa's top restaurants, and serves an inspired contemporary take on the classics. Lunch is enjoyed on the Fountain Terrace under a spreading pepper tree while dinner is enjoyed in the elegant but relaxed dining room in the original manor house. Set on the original site of Franschhoek's first parfumerie, today its the heavenly scent of chef Adrian Buchanans cooking that inspires at the Monneaux Restaurant, a Cape culinary classic. Even by the food & wine capital of the country's high standards, Monneaux is an extra-ordinary success, having been in the country's Top 100 list for six years consecutively, on the Top 10 list for two years and winning the American Express Platinum Award for fine dining. The underground cellar is available for private functions where dinner can be enjoyed by an impressive selection of local and foreign wines. Very pleasant quiet location in a walled-garden setting out of the centre of Franschhoek. The menu suggests picking 3 to 5 dishes to share between two people. We tried octopus (not to our taste) crayfish, strip beef and a chicken and prawn curry. All dishes well-presented and service was excellent.I had a nice glass of red wine and the whole experience was very relaxed.

Pierneef a La Motte

The name of the restaurant was inspired by La Motte's admiration of South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 - 1957). Pierneef's creativity in portraying the beauty of the South African landscape is echoed in the restaurant's offering of traditional cuisine with a modern interpretation. The restaurant interior blends beautifully with the external surroundings - a fresh, natural look inside is embraced by tranquil Gardens and majestic oak trees - where a Winelands Tea with a selection of home-baked delights from the La Motte Farm Shop can be enjoyed. The exclusively arranged Pierneef a La Motte Chef's Table offers a fine-dine menu in line with guests' preferences, as pre-arranged with Chef Michelle Theron, as well as a harmoniously complementing wine selection

The restaurant is quite vast with high ceilings and the tables very far apart. Decor is very eclectic and very beautiful but overall the ambience is cold and not very welcoming. There is zero atmosphere. That said the we had the tasting menu with wine flight. I told the waitress I had an allergy to oaked wines and they went to great trouble to make sure I was accommodated, The food was amazing however the portions were very small in contrast to the glasses of wine that very extremely generous and with the food were probably too large!
I don't think being Irish I've ever had that compliant before but I would say more food and less wine!

Babel Restaurant

Housed in an old cow shed, Babel is a wonderful mix of Cape Dutch architecture with contemporary glass walls that makes for a simple yet edgy environment in which to try our tasty yet often unconventional combinations. We have a farm-to-fork philosophy, which means we like to serve food that is seasonal and that reflects our "pick, clean and serve" approach. Because our menu is guided by what is available in the garden, our food always reflects the season, and so in summer we may serve you a yellow salad of pineapple, gooseberries, granadillas, yellow tomatoes and apricots while in winter a slow-cooked leg of lamb in red wine is more likely. Dessert subscribes to four flavours, namely salty, bitter, sweet and sour. And while our meals are creative, we don't like to tamper unduly with our food. Our meals are always clear in structure, so that fruit and vegetables gathered daily from the garden is often served with its skin on. Helpings are generous and depending on the weather you can take your meal in the glass-enclosed restaurant or under the plane trees in the courtyard.

Roca Restaurant

It just seems meant to be that the location of Roca on Dieu Donne is actually translated as Rock on God Given land. This becomes apparent on first observing the iconic views of the Franschoek Valley from the upper deck of the double volume Roca Restaurant. The visionary behind the Dieu Donne wine estate, Robert Maingard, has no doubt inculcated the dynamic restaurant proprietor, Craig Sherrell, to use the space in which the energy of sacred geometry has been introduced. A visit here can be lengthy as the beauty; the food, the wine and the service have an amazing effect. The upper indoor space, Seating 120 covers has its special aura, complimented by the Seed and Flower of Life and the Cross of Loraine.

We've eaten here twice, recently and then a year prior. I loved the experience, sitting outside with a front-row seat to watch the sunset across the Mountains. As the Mountains fade into darkness, the stars become the show. This year, they had a live guitarist who was good and played softly enough that you could still carry on a conversation at your table. I can't quite give Roca a 5 because I find their food to be just a half-step below so many other places in town that are in the same price range. They may have different chefs on different nights because the malva pudding was different (and better) a year prior. But the overall experience is so enjoyable that I'd definitely go back. I'd give them a four and a half if it were possible. Roca is not within walking distance of the center of town, especially not at night, and the road back doesn't have the best lighting, so take a taxi and enjoy the wine.

Sustainable comfort cooking in a relaxed bistro setting. Big fireplace, wooden tables & chairs and open plan kitchen. Local produce and wines with an emphasis on terroir cooking. And now fully licensed.

Having booked some three months earlier, the Foliage lived up to its reputation with a very unusual menu that enticed the taste buds. The starters were full of wonderful herbs and spices, whilst the beef main course was beautifully presented and tasted magnificent.
The staff were friendly and very enthusiastic about what they were serving.
An excellent wine list, covered all local estate wines with varying prices.
The kitchen was a hive of activity with tremendous creativity.
The only downside on the evening we were there was a couple enjoying their intimate liaison in full view of everybody, which did not add to the otherwise friendly atmosphere.
