Caldeira das Furnas

Reviewed By MickyC-AUS - Melbourne, Australia

Caldeira das Furnas is an amazing site with numerous thermal displays to wander around and get up close to. There are mini-geisers errupting from the earth, boiling water bubbling in small ponds, fumeroles emitting puffs of steam that hiss from the ground and the characteristic smell of sulphur is in the air. The whole area has been well laid out with pathways and barriers for personal safety that do not intrude or interfere with the visual experience. Township is worth a wander too. Spectacular, dramatic and very impressive.

For a unique experience visit the Caldeira. You can see smoke rising from several places in the town but this location( 50cents entry) has a boardwalk through the percolating earth. Bubbling sulphurous holes in the earth spew steam. Several local restaurants have their own pits where they cook their food.

There is a large parking lot across the highway, that was free during our visit, from there you have to walk for about 5 -10 minutes to reach the center. Along the way you will pass the Gothic church and the garden Jose do Canto (excellent). The center has a nice snack bar, restrooms and a presentation room that is very informative. The center is working hard to reverse the effects of agricultural practices within the watershed of the lake. Cattle grazing and fertilizers have led to an abundance of Algae causing the green color of the lake. This is a very interesting and educational attraction.

It is hard to miss this unusual 19th century private chapel / mausoleum which is situated on the edge of Lake Furnas (inside the Jose do Canto gardens). Access to the Gardens costs €3 and they are open from 10.00 until 18.00. We contented ourselves with taking photographs of the chapel from both inside and outside of the Gardens. However, we understand that it is possible to gain access to the chapel by asking the staff at the entrance gate / ticket office.
