So, pasta with bacon in a cheese sauce. $28 for a very large bowl. Pasta was over cooked; forget pasta in a sauce, this was pasta in a cheese soup. Far too much liquid, didn't stick to the pasta. Tagliatelle wasn't their best choice either given the consistency of the "sauce".
I despair this is rated one of the best places to eat in Alex. I'd fear for NZ cuisine, but I know Dunedin & elsewhere has some very good places to eat. Perhaps 3☆ against other NZ, ie average; but on a world scale 2☆.

Situated over the Shaky Bridge that crosses the Manuherikia River, Shaky Bridge Cafe is a relaxing 10 minute walk from the Alexandra I-Site and the central part of town. Follow the river track or walk along Tarbert St until you see the signs for the Shaky Bridge. If driving, follow Tarbert St to Little Valley Road where you will see our sign. Enjoy breakfast, bunch, lunch or platter other local products as you taste through several Shaky Bridge wines, from Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rose and Riesling. Our Cafe style menu offers high quality food options and exceptional service. Visit our Cellar Door retail store to take your favourite wines home with you (cellar door only on appointment). Located directly under Alexandra's infamous 'Clock on the hill', Shaky Bridge Wines & Cafe is easy to find and well worth your walk!
This was recommended to us by quite a few locals so thought we better pay a visit. Relatively easy to find and about 10 minutes walk from the Main Street of Alexandra. Nice location next to the vineyard and great outlook across the river. Service was friendly and attentive and the food looked amazing (we didn’t have anything to eat). The only issue we had was that we asked for extra hot coffee and and it wasn’t really hot. Good tasting Allpress coffee and a great place to relax and read the paper.

Had a flat white to go and a fruit custard brioche muffin thing that was not at all what I thought it was. However I could never have dreamt up such a delicious coffee accompaniment as this. Coffee was VERY hot, but that is not a complaint either. The atmosphere is very cool and runs with the goose theme without being cheesy. Going to have to try a cooked breakfast here next time.

We stopped in Alexandra for a break from driving and were not expecting much in the way of good cafes. We were wrong!
Side Walk cafe is a lovely place, with tables inside and out. The coffee was good and the BLAT Sandwich I had was almost a meal - I had to resort to using cutlery to eat it.

One of the best cafes I have ever been to, generous servings and a great selection of food, I will let the photos speak for themselves. Only one criticism, I ordered a salmon bagel with cream cheese, it was sitting in the cabinet and looked delicious and it came out toasted which I hadn't asked for :( Other than that the rest of our lunches were fantastic.

Friendly relaxed atmosphere. A sumptuous menu to satisfy any appetite. Families welcome, lovely indoor, outdoor dining. Open seven days 10.30am til 2pm, and from 6pm til close. Ample parking and great coffee. Close to Central Otago Rail Trail and walking tracks.
A fantastic way to spend the morning. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the home made treats while sipping on a nice refreshing cup of tea, coffee or what ever your desire.

The Inn accepts internet bookings but signage at the location says "Closed for Winter". Keys were left on the reception door but lighting for those arriving after 5pm was poor. Rooms were nice but the lack of lighting and service staff made the experience a poor one. Come back n guys - are you open for business or just trying to collect money!!

Chatto creek tavern is an award winning hotel that provides a relaxed atmosphere great food and genuine hospitality were time is measured by the glass not by the hour. We have a great garden bar and dining area.
This is a beautiful location with good food and friendly attentive staff. Menu is reasonably large, good selection of beers, food we voth had was excellent.
Having NZ smallest Post Office on grounds a bonus.
Everyone on Otago Rail Trail should make a point of stopping and having a bite.

Traditional kiwi baking and meals
We decided to try the Cafe Rossi for lunch as we we had not been in there for some time. Since our last visit there some time ago, they have done a lot of renovations to the betterment of the premisis. The food was great, very home style like. Partner had a chowder, I had bacon and eggs. It has been an age since I have had crispy bacon and it was to die for!
I would say, they will see us back there before long.
