Head out on a cycle ride through the beautiful Central Otago region to relive the glory of the gold rush days and the romance of rail travel. Trail Journeys is one of the first companies to operate on the very popular Otago Central Railtrail in the Southern part of New Zealand. Trail Journeys provide all the services associated with the trail to make the experience comfortable and hassle-free. We are Qualmark rated with a Silver Endorsed Visitor Activity and a Silver Enviro Award.
Trail Journeys organized bike hire, accommodation, transportation on relatively short notice for us. Everything was done flawlessly including well kept bikes, lodging ready when we got there, daily luggage transport and transfer from trails end back to our vehicle. We did entire trail Middlemarch to Clyde. Everyone super friendly and helpful. The trail was a great trip. We would strongly recommend both the trip and trail journeys to organize your ability to do independently.

We walked up to see the clock, bit of a walk up the hill but worth it. You can see the clock from town but good to get up close. Bit different.

The ladies here could not have been more welcoming and helpful, they really know their stuff. We found lots of new places to visit and things to do after our chat with them. Also liked the small museum. Many thanksThank you Janet, this is wonderful feedback for the team here.

So much to take in here - the site itself is visually stunning with views up and down the valley; the stonework is beautiful and the story behind the cottage is fascinating.
An excellent description and history is available in the Guide to Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail, by Gerald Cunningham.
Easily accessed via the main road; parking is limited but a turning area is provided further up.
Take a camera, and your time!

We are a small family vineyard, winery and cellar door. We also provide guest accommodation on site in our two self contained guest cottages. Open from 11am - 5pm daily between September and April, outside of these hours by appointment.
Beautiful place to stay! We stayed in one of the cottages in the middle of the vineyard. The cottage was lovely and new. Very spacious and had a fantastic kitchen/living area. The position of the cottage and views made for a real wee getaway! Not to mention a great people to deal with and delicious wines! We will be back!!!

Elegant - Sensuous - Intimate. Award Winning Pinot Noir wines from Jacobson-Chiaroni family boutique vineyard. The wines produced from this vineyard have received many awards, showcasing the premium quality of Judge Rock wines. A romance not a blockbuster, feminine not masculine, balance not power, family not corporate, and love not lust. Come enjoy a tasting :)
Relaxed tasting sitting around an outdoor table in the back yard, from Angela the owner
We tasted 4 wines a Riesling, 2 Pinot Noirs and a St Laurent which is a grape variety I had not tried before, and enjoyed, and had to buy a bottle.
Price range of the wine are from $20 to $35, the Venus Point Noir a $20 is great buying

Family owned 19.2Ha vineyard producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Riesling wine.
I went to Three Miners with my wife and 3 friends for a tasting. When we arrived we drove through the vineyard to the cellar door. Not a soul to be seen. Then the owner, Jeff, rode out of the vines on his quad bike to greet us. The cellar door is what you would expect a gold miners house would be like when the gold rush was on 150 years ago. Rough and ready with a worn wooden floor and a well aged tasting counter.
Jeff hosted us very well telling us the history of the winery and the wines while we sampled the fruits of his labours. After sampling the full range of wines we made our selections and headed back to our accommodations fully stocked up for an afternoons antipasto platter by the dam and a good hearty Pinot to go with the BBQ'ed pork leg for dinner.

Grey Ridge is a boutique vineyard in Alexandra, Central Otago. The views across the vineyard to the Mountains beyond are amazing in every season! At Grey Ridge we offer free Wine Tasting from the Cellar Door while enjoying the views. Grey Ridge is planted with purely Pinot Noir vines, from which we make four different wines. They are all "Single Vineyard", and made from hand tended and hand picked grapes. Come and try our White Pinot Noir, our gold medal winning Pinot Rose, and our gold medal winning Pinot Noir. The luxurious accommodation in our Grey Ridge Vineyard Suite is spacious and completely private, while the Gardens, terraces and the vineyard itself offer plenty of space to enjoy. When you stay with us on the Vineyard your package includes a private vineyard tour with the owner, followed by a private wine tasting and a delicious breakfast the next day. You are welcome to join your hosts for a wine matched dinner if you would rather relax on the vineyard than go out.
The suite is part of the house where the hosts Sue and Paul lives. You get good private space (the bedroom, a small lounge and a bathroom). There is a large living room and kitchen shared with the hosts. A nice outdoor area too. There is a Television in the shared living room.
Given that growing grapes for wine making was new to the hosts only 3 years back, it is impressive the knowledge they have gathered and this shows in the wines they produce. We thought outstanding wines, especially the rose wines. We enjoyed the vineyard tour.
Things we feel is an opportunity for Sue and Paul to consider are: (1) Because we stayed at Christmas Day, our tour operator advised us that there was a surcharge of 25% on top of the $280 rate. We accepted the increased rate as there were no other accommodation available in the area (even though I booked 4 months in advance). We really appreciate Sue and Paul opening up their home for us on this special day of the year, however, this rate of $350 for the night we feel is too high for the overall accommodation package provided. (2) Communication with the tour operator we had who proposed Grey Ridge Vineyard. For the dinner at Grey Ridge Vineyard, our tour operator described a 3 course meal for $65 per person. We received a 2 course meal which was charged at $75 per person. (3) The dinner we received was a nice home-cooked meal which was highly appreciated - and it included a good serve of wine. However, for $75 per person, one would expect a reasonable high quality restaurant meal. (4) We feel the breakfast could be better. However every one have different breakfast expectations. The croissants I hope was a one off because they weren't the best. Perhaps an idea is to check with the guests ahead of the stay what their breakfast expectations are. (5) In our view, there is an opportunity to make the bathroom really nice with some luxury items and high quality products.

Dunstan Road is a tiny, family owned artisan vineyard, winery and tasting room. We produce a selection of wines on the property and can offer tastings in our beautiful courtyard and vineyard and winery tours.
We loved this winery!!! We loved EVERY wine we tasted! Sarah and Marc are amazing at what they do- they both have SO much knowledge about wine making and horticulture. We enjoyed watching the sheep throughout the vineyards "leaf picking", and had the special opportunity to taste wines straight out of the barrel with Marc. We loved how intimately the wines were made- small vineyards, family ran, and such care put into creating every bottle of wine from start to finish- by themselves!
Marc and Sarah are a lovely couple, making you feel at ease at like your at home from the moment you step into the cellar door.
If your lucky, you may get to meet their other special family members.. two adorable dogs, and two adorable children!!!
Can't wait to come back to Dunstan Road Next time we are in NZ!!!!
