The little village of Riquewihr, not far from the Rhine River, is a wonderful place to take photographs, with its brightly colored historic buildings. We found the merchants there to be friendly and accommodating. One thing we found strange was that when we visited there on a Sunday morning, both the Protestant Church and the Catholic Church were locked.

This beautiful watchtower is a highlight of the picturesque town of Riquewihr and dominates its skyline. Set on one end of the old town, it is a good starting point to explore the old town. Though we didn't have time to go up the tower, I can imagine the nice views it must offer.

This is a tasting spot in the middle of Riquewihr, on the Alsace wine route.
Hugel makes white wines and this is a tasting spot (not a winery). They do not sell the tasting - they offer free tasting of all the various wines. The wines are so good that you will end up purchasing at least a bottle or two.
I recommend the Pinot Gris - it is exceptional. The Riesling was also excellent.

What an opportune first stop upon arrival in the village. The space is intimate and beautifully curated. Its multi floors require use of your ankles, which is a good prep for outside exploration. the artworks are original and cover a lot of art history.
This village is one of the most delicious places on earth, nestling at the entrance to a small, tree-clad valley on the Alsace plain. From the village, splendid views are afforded over the valley, all the way from the Alps to the fringes of the Vosges.
A short ride from Strasbourg had us ensconced at the approaches to the village, spell-bound to see the encirclement by vineyards, sheltered from the winds by three hills. Medieval to the core, Riquewihr possesses an astonishing architectural heritage. Sadly its historic centre was destroyed by fire in January 2014, making it difficult to bring in the fire fighting equipment into the tight layout of its lane ways.
We enter the village through the imposing fortified walls, some 25 m high, the exterior facade of the towering bell fry displays a military aspect, whereas the side facing town is half- timbered rising to four floors. There's lots of carved timbering on the typical Alsatian houses especially behind the upper gate where medieval and renaissance architecture remain almost intact. Its paved streets boast all manner of building styles, rendered even more attractive by an abundance of flowers.
The other museum is full of treasures with a fascination for the gruesome, torture and 'instruments'. The wine grower's house had a very interesting kitchen strewn with historic utensils and a store-room that contained tools used in coopery and vine-tending.
The town' entrance has one of Europe's oldest portcullis predating the Tower of London . all this walking, needs sustenance of some kougelhopf, pretzels and gingerbread, washed down with one or two of the excellent wines of the region. This town is the most pleasing stop-over, admirably preserved and rewarding gastronomic pit-stop.

This is tucked away in Riquelihr but is worth a visit. When we visited there was an extra exhibition of the start of the French Postal air service all the way to Agentina starting in the 1920's. Very interesting.

We visited here with a small tour group and were treated to tasting of many wines including a good tasting Riesling 2015 at 8.90€ each which was well worth buying. We also tasted more expensive wines and sparkling wines which were nice to sample. The Seating area was relaxed and soft Seating. There was also larger Seating area with tables. Toilets on site.

A small working brewery with tasting bar/shop approx 200m below the lower town entrance. Greeted by a polite enthusiastic owner and offered a glass of their product.
Delicious....miles away from the international eurofizz one has had to endure for years in France! At last they are catching on! Great wine in the area, but this little place should not be missed whilst in Riquewhir. Formal visits available.

This year again we visited Maison Zimmer in Riquewihr for a tasting and purchase of their Alsace wines.
The tasting with Mlle Zimmer was very good.
With her knowledge and explanations she helped us decide what to buy.
We bought Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer, all of them as normal wines and as Vieilles Vignes, and Crémant Blanc de Noirs, a delicious sparkling wine.
All these wines we know since many years and they always have been excellent.
Highly recommended.

Riquewihr is a delightful town, once you manage to find a carpark. The entrance road takes you on a circuit around the town, so take the first place you find, it's popular
The Visitors centre was very helpful, pointing out the best features. A great place to start a wander around Riquewihr
