Derwent Reservoir

A stunning drive around all 3 reservoirs, Ladybower, Derwent and Howden. There is a moving memorial to the Dambusters at Derwent dam. The memorial to a sheepdog called Tip is worth looking at too. Be aware that there is no vehicular access to the road around the dams on Saturday. Sunday or Bank Holidays, you have to take the minibus check locally for more information.
PLEASE TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME, DON'T LEAVE IT UNDER THE SEATS
Lots of parking places offer easy access for viewing.

Many months since last visit & able to see evidence of the continued investment & development with quilters cottage construction & the start of the 1950's town. This will be really good to see when finished. Although seen before, it is still really good to see how seamlessly the chemist & photographers have integrated into what was already there. Think we've had recent visits for last two or three years. Always something to see,a nice day out, very handy being relatively local approx 15 miles. Definitely recommended, even if you're on holiday & can only visit for a single day. Very interesting & would be very surprised if anyone would not find something of interest.

Chopwell Woods

This is is the first time we have visited Chopwell wood. Free admission, looked after by the forestry commission. Plenty of car parking. Picnic tables are available. An information board tells you about the walks. There is a green walk which is the longest, it's a boundary walk. A red walk which is 3 1/2 miles and classed as strenuous. A blue walk which is the old railway path and is 1 and a half miles long. There is also a very small yellow walk. Lots of cyclists, horse riders and dog walkers in the woods.we did 3 walks in the afternoon and enjoyed all 3. There was lots of paths off the main tracks, but we followed the designated walks. There are no toilets available.

We called on the morning of the 17th to see if it was open given the weather. After being told that they were open and it was ok to visit we travelled to the park. When we arrived we asked again if everything was ok to use. On first glance we noticed that some of the rides were not out. The staff were all stood shivering in the snow and cold winds but we decided to give it a go. On our second ride one of the trucks/diggers decided to break down 4 times leaving members of the family stuck in what can only be described as a swamp! The member of staff who started the machine back up told us it was because of the cold weather!! We decided at this point to take the 3 year old and two 5 year olds back inside and ask for a refund. My advice is don’t waste your breathe as they are happy to take £150 off you but you can’t get it back!! In the children’s play area there was a big cardboard box full of rubbish with other cardboard corners sticking out. The soft play has rips in the material. All in all this was an awful experience.

Came upon this attraction whilst visiting Lanchester Garden Centre.
£2 admission fee per person -kids under 2 go free.
All children under 12 to be supervised by an adult.
A guide explained that the "village" has free flying birds,
plus a couple who are not yet ready to fly.
Marcus the grey parrot, will walk across the floor to greet you and is such a friendly character!

Yet the area was not noisy at all.
A variety of birds fly overhead and have nesting boxes.
Look high and low to see the birds including budgies, lovebirds, cockatoo and others.
There is a lovely Fountain and pool where many fish swim.
Terrapins -don't reach out to touch them -they bite!
Colourful parrots and then....
the reptiles...snakes from small corn snakes to large pythons
Tortoise, iguanas all in a wonderful tropical enviroment and well cared for.
There are seats in the area including 2 boat benches.
A lovely place to visit and well worth the entry fee.
Why not visit the owls for free at the garden centre too....or should that be twitt twoo ;)
Will most definetly be back.

We always come here on a Sunday after a walk with the kids and it is fantastic, it has a lovely little play park at the back with trampoline, slide and swings which is perfect keeping the kids busy for a cheeky pint. It also does a 'Sunday dinner' take away service which is brilliant idea.

It is a great day out for ages, I went with my partner and found it to be a good team builder as well as a good laugh. The staff were great with us, even at the end when I panicked because of the drop but they soon put me at ease and made it worth every minute.
The only thing I can pick up on is the cafe being over priced, we were charged a lot more than what the menu's were priced at, so not sure how much drinks are. But the high ropes experience is up there as one of my best days out yet!

My nine years old son loves soft play centres and we have to visit a new one each time. The pictures on the Internet don't do it justice. There is a fairly large play frame with lots of slides and climbing opportunities. There is also trampolines which my son loves. The cafe is canny and the staff are friendly and helpful. All in all a good place to take children to burn off energy.

Tanfield Railway

The Tanfield Railway, the World's oldest railway dating back to 1725, is a wonderful day out for all the family, whatever the weather. Just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery as steam drifts past your vintage carriage in a truly yesteryear atmosphere, when lifes pace was less hurried. Trains operate every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday throughout the year, plus Thursdays and Saturdays during the school Summer holidays. Make sure to break your journey at Causey Arch and take a walk across the World's oldest surviving railway, built in 1725 to transport coal from the Durham Coalfields to the River Tyne. Also, a short stroll from Andrews House station, is the engineering base of the railway at Marley Hill. Here you can get up close to our working and stored locomotives within the World's oldest working engine shed, built in 1854. Catering facilities are located at Andrews House station, Pontop Canteen at Marley Hill and Tommy Armstrong's tea room at East Tanfield station.

Magical experience for children. Very well organised by staff and volunteers. We visited as a family age range from 3 to 80 years. Enjoyed by all. Our boys also loved Frosty the Snowman who is great with the children. Everything perfect from the arrival where the children are given passports for the journey to the North Pole via steam train then snacks and visit to Santa's grotto. Nice gifts for the children from Santa and plenty time for photographs - we didn't feel rushed even though it was very busy. Perfect day out - the scattering of snow made the "North Pole" all the more believable, Very well done to everyone involved with this,

Garesfield Golf Club

Reviewed By Philip S - Pakenham, United Kingdom

I still can't believe that I only had to pay £10 to play this course, but that's the weekday twilight rate and for this you'll get some challenging holes, some great views and plenty of peace and quiet.
The course only faults are the steep walk up the 12th and the blind second shot at the 13th, but the downhill tee shots, (and views), at 7 and 8 far outweigh these problems. Generally it's a course which rewards straight hitting, due mainly to the presence of trees and in many places gorse. All of the par 4's are less than 400 yards from the yellow tees and there's a good mixture of par 3's from 120 to 190 yards. For a course built in 1922 it felt very modern.
Tees and greens were in great condition considering it was mid April, although they could do with more litter bins; I only noted one, (on the 10th), during my round. Very friendly welcome in the pro shop and plenty of Mars bars available to buy; you'll need one walking up the hill at the 12th.
