Plan Incline de Ronquieres

We went here after the impressive ship's lift in Strépy-Thieu, but that was quite a disappointment, as nothing happened for over an hour. There is an exhibition of an hour and a half, which seems to be very good, but we didn't have enough time left.

Le Petit Train du Bonheur

For all rail/steam enthusiasts this little narrow gauge line is a unique one off in my experience, truly Belgian, and one of only 4 preserved rail facilities in Belgium I am told.
Run by Volunteers it is a sheer delight to travel in the open windowed coaches from the old (now closed ) rail station in Rebecq (with car parking & availability for coaches to stay also) opposite the platform whence the little train departs. No shelter on the Platform for bad weather days and running only at 14.30:16.00:17.30 Dimanches it is an unusual experience as the lineside greenery enhances a rural tranquillity until the end of the line where the train reverses to the intermediate station where the locomotive runs around the train allowing time for passengers to get refreshments and souvenirs before continuing their journey. I note here that I have allowed time for people with Mobility problems, as I have myself so might be judged excessive by people without reduced Mobility. I note also that I found my fellow users most courteous and friendly even though not sharing a common language with them all, smiling faces and a helping hand where evrywhere to be found, not always so today

Hallerbos – ‘'The Blue Forest’'

Absolutely terrific place to jog. There are miles of trails conditioned for walking, jogging or biking. The larger trails have street names but the majority of the trails has no tagging at all, so make sure you plan your way before using the map, it could get confusing, and a wrong turn could add a couple of km to your journey.
Drive to the East entrance, where there is ample parking, at the 8 way ( yes 8 major trails leave from one point), but plan ahead as all the access roads are not always open in the weekend.
Unique is also the separation of horse trails from ten others. You can catch glimpses of gracious horse riders here and there without having to worry you will share the same space with your baby carriage and a giant trotting animal.
If you are coming from the South or West there are other parking areas as well.

Collegiate Church of Saint Gertrude

Reviewed By Elwing - Antwerp, Belgium

I was really looking forward to visiting this impressive Romanesque church, but I walked around it and could not find any way in. Maybe it is just closed on Tuesdays, there were signs but I could not read them as they were only in French. I tried to ask for help at the city hall, which is attached to the building, but I could not find any person who was willing to speak to me or even look at me. So I peeked trough the windows and caught a few glimpses of what looked like a wonderful old cloister.
And then I left Nivelles disappointed, musing about the pettiness of the Belgian language struggle. Tourist go home!

Sportoase

The Antwerp based string of several Sportoase venues is rapidly spreading in Belgium... and in doing sso is revolutionizing the whole field of classic (and often boring and cold) swimming pools. I am sure they are now ,boostingoveral Belgian health!.I am a fan of the Aqua complex in Braine and in Halle. I mainly enjoy the relaxing warm water pool (massage jets, hopping in the fun little 'river' and finishing in hammam or (bio or salt) sauna. And in Braine I love the bubble jets, hot wall and a bit of 'ice' therapy. All Oases differ slightly, have a wealth of good ideas and courses (aquagym, kids swimming lessons). I love the families splashing around together happily, seniors like me working on their condition, and watching the group of tiny babies fearlessly swimming under water is just a heavenly experience. I cannot speak about the fitness but theit equipmant looks fine. I am also a fan of their taverna: a good glowing coffee, and the most fabulous parma ham and pesto Sandwich in the world - the Portuguese (?) owner makes the pesto himself!!!! Charming wife too.

This old fashioned brewery has only recently begun brewing beer the modern way. They give you a great tour of the brewery, including the old section. The history of the brewery is a highlight in a country where beer brewing is a long practiced art. The best part is the tasting afterward. Yum! The Grand Cru is full bodied and rich. Worth the trip!

La Chapelle de Verre de Fauquez

Reviewed By AnnefromBelgium111 - Brussels, Belgium

I first entered this 'Glass Chapel' years ago. I had been intrigued several times by the rather bizarre building (will not talk too much here about the (social) history, but it is worth to have a look at the website to have it explained-. Main thing is that is all about the artisanal marbled glass that was once the pride of the village. All this was explained to me by the then owner, (while he was repairing the fence around St Michael outside) who saved the building, and had a splendid weekend Breton pancake-eatery then. I do not know how catering is with his successors - I attended an event there and they served good food.
The grand building is not far from the Ronquieres ship lift and a charming old canal.
