Australia's premier rail trail offers more than 100km of scenic, sealed, off-road bike trail in North East Victoria. Starting in Wangaratta, the rail trail connects culinary villages including Milawa, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Bright and Myrtleford. Discover the diverse landscape of the High Country region - from natural bushland to open farmland, fertile Valleys and some of Australia's most spectacular mountain ranges. The rail trail meanders alongside clear rivers, vineyards, hops, orchards and groves, with plentiful food, wine and craft beer experiences dotted along the way.
My husband and I rode the Beechworth spur branch and loved it. He is a much stronger rider than I am so he drove our car from Beechworth to Everton Station, rode the 19km steady uphill leg back again, then collected me from the Lake Sambell Caravan Park in Beechworth for the downhill journey back to the car. The entire trail is sealed so is suitable for any type of bike. Along the way are the Flame Tree mountain bike tracks running parallel to the main trail which are graded from easy to hard. These tracks are a bit of fun if you're up for the challenge. The Beechworth to Everton leg is very easy, it requires very little pedalling as it is literally mostly downhill, but only tackle the reverse if you like a consistent uphill ride.

Come in and see us for all your Wangaratta visitor needs, from accommodation, hiking and cycling to wining and dining in Wangaratta and our surrounding towns such as Milawa, Oxley, Eldorado, Glenrowan and the King Valley. We also showcase works from local artists and various community groups in our Exhibition space. With a rotating calendar of monthly exhibits the Exhibitions are refreshed with new works showcased on a regular basis. Some works are for sale.
I contacted the Information centre regarding information for Ned Kelly Trail information, places not to miss and accommodation.
Mary-Ann was a wonderful help. She sent out brochures etc to look through and recommendations on things 'not to miss' in the region from Benalla - Beechworth - Genrowan etc.
The Cenre's website was most helpful and we selected our accommodation from there which was just ideal.
We visited the Centre on our arrival and the staff member was so helpful, covering everything we wanted to know.
This saved many hours of looking for places we were interested in.
The historic display in the Information Centre was very interesting also.

The 14,655 ha Warby-Ovens National Park is characterised by three distinct vegetation communities - the granitic hills and woodlands of the Warby Range, the Box-Ironbark of the Killawarra Forest and the Redgum forest and wetlands of the unregulated Ovens Heritage River. Together they provide an important link from the alpine foothills to the Murray River, protecting some of the state's most significant bushland. The Victorian Government created Warby-Ovens National Park, along with other new and expanded parks and over 200 conservation reserves, in June 2010. Picnic at Ryan's Lookout (where the views are exceptional), Brien's Gorge Falls, Pine Gully and The Forest Camp - all have barbeque facilities and picnic tables. Walk through the managed tracks, bike ride the Pangarang Lookout Walk or Ridge track, or take a scenic drive. There are basic campgrounds at Wenhams Camp and The Forest Camp with pit toilets and barbecues, but bring your own drinking water. Warby-Ovens National Park is 240km north east of Melbourne and 10km west of Wangaratta. It is best accessed from Wangaratta via Wangandary and Yarrawonga Roads.
We had a delightful say exploring some if the look outs and Waterfalls - which were superb after the recent rains. Very picturesque NP kept clean easily accessible and the walks we did were family friendly with lots to interest the kids. Glorious Sunshine showcased everything beautifully including the spring wildflowers

This is a spacious library that is well set out to cater for a range of ages and borrowers' needs. The staff are extremely helpful and engaging. The internet access is regularly used by the public and they operate a coin operated copying service that is easy to use.
The library is up to date on new releases and promotes a range of events that would interest library users. I have attended the compost making workshop as well as citrus care and how to prune and look after your roses. The herb information session and swap was very popular. This library is a wonderful community asset.

The King George V Gardens is located in the centre of Wangaratta close to shops and the cinema. The Gardens are known for its magnificent Plane Trees (Plantanus sp) giving lots of shade. The Gardens has a Children's Playground and Toilet facilities.
there are some lovely spots in these Gardens. The playground is really popular with young kids and even though it's a relatively small park there is a sense of escaping from the noise of the CBD. The trees are huge and picturesque, maybe a even little protective.
There are plenty of food spots near by where you can take some eats from into the park to relax with.

A sunken natural park, originally a meeting place of the Pangerang Aboriginal Tribe. The name Merriwa mean the rich flat ground at the bend of a river. The park features Gardens below street level, large grassy expanses, majestic gum trees, fernery, pond, playground equipment, barbecues and toilets. An oasis in the middle of vibrant city centre.
Viewed this park from Ely street and drove around till found entrance off Wangaratta Road, just a short drive down and parked where we could see picnic tables by a pond among the tall gum trees and beautifully kept green lawns, we took our own picnic basket and thermos and enjoyed a very quiet afternoon tea by the pond which is below the street above but so quiet except when the ducks spied us, their antics were funny as they vied for very little food, when gone they dispersed but not far, a lady with her 3 little girls had a wonderful time letting them run free in total safety, we will return here again and explore more of it

Our modern indoor Aquatic faciltiy features a 25m temperture controlled pool, a therapeautic Program Pool and a Toddlers Pool. We also have a fully equipped, spacious Health Club with the latest equipment, more than 50 group exercise classes per week. We also have three full sized stadium courts & six squash courts. The Wangaratta Indoor Sports & Aquatics Centre caters for people of all ages.
I go to the gym most days and am always warmly welcomed by the staff. I use the gym, the exercise pool and the 25metre lap pool. The membership fees are very reasonable for pensioners who like me take advantage of the facilities regularly. The centre caters to a wide age range and levels of fitness. It is a welcoming place.

Views from Ryan's Lookout are exceptional throughout the year, but most especially in winter with snow covered peaks in the distance. Barbeque facilities are available at the lookout making it a perfect location for a family picnic and hike. Ryan's Lookout has a car park, and the lookout platform is about 100 metres from the car park.
it's a nice drive out of Wangaratta towards the Warby Ranges, past the local golf course which is home to many kangaroos for a good photo opportunity if you like. There is a sign for Ryan's at the top of the drive and after a short drive then walk, you can climb the steps to the lookout. It is not difficult at all. Take some binoculars if you have them handy so you can have a good view over the valley. You may even see snow in the easterly Mountains. this is a good spot for a visit on the way to Baileys Winery which is lovely as well.
