A truly original way to explore the beauty and serenity of the Pollino National Park in Basilicata. Unexpected natural beauty in the south of Italy, exploring creeks, Canyons and local flora and fauna. All Acqua Trekking gear is provided on site by the leaders. This is an experiece to remember.

Just fantastic! The view must be one of the most beautiful in the world. The water is deep blue and green in places, with a large natural swimming pool surrounded by rocks. We went there towards the end of September and we relaxed under beautiful olive trees, with few people around and, best of all, no music! BLISS!

Cantine del Notaio is glad to welcome new friends and Italian and foreign guests to taste its wines, visiting the ancient Franciscan grottoes of volcanic tufo radiating around the 'Facile', telling you about stories, territory tradition and about wine growing. Please Note: Excursion and/or wine tasting, need to be booked two days first.
This was a fantastic experience. The girls were very knowledgeable. They gave a great tour of the grottos and discussed the history of the region and wine making. The wine tasting, cheeses and salumi that we were given after the tour were all amazing. I am planning to go back again. It was a great experience and a true gem in the region.

We had a wonderfull experience at Dolomitidiscovery. We did the 1,5 hour tour with 2 drivers and 2 passengers. We had a couple of nice stops to enjoy the wonderfull views of Pietrapertoza and Castelmezzano. We did some nice offroad and onroad driving. Our guide explained everything very good and made soms extra stops so we could have the opportunity to taken more pictures. We can really recommend the quad driving and also the very nice guide who took us out. Must do in Basilicata!

This was something to see - quite amazing! We drove to Castelmazzano from a neighboring town of Calvello in the Basilicata region. The attraction "Flight of the Angel" is a ride from the small, medieval town of Castelmezzano to its neighbor, Pietrapertosa in a harness on a zip line. You glide back and forth between two very grand and scenic dolomite Mountains. The area is breathtaking, but the "ride" is not for the faint of heart. If you opt out of flying like an angel, you can still watch the participants and stroll around the very charming and unusual town. The restaurants there were bustling with locals and tourists and the food was quite good. A great day trip and an awesome adventure

Proposal for an itinerary in the northern section of this beautiful Park, including locations belonging to different towns (Viggianello, San Severino Lucano, Terranova di Pollino, Oriolo), approaching from the Calabria side, northwards deep into Basilicata, then coming back in Calabria from the Ionian coast –
Start from Campotenese highland, along the A3 highway Salerno- Reggio Calabria. Drive up towards Piano di Ruggio, a tableau at 1,600m above the sea, possibly with a quick stop at Il Fortino bifurcation for nice photo opportunities over the Campotenese plain. Ruggio is located roughly 15Km from Campotenese, and along the way you will see the flora changes as beautiful beeches (so much present all over the Pollino park) make their first appearances.
Make a stop at Piano di Ruggio (Viggianello Municipality), enjoy the fresh air and the great vistas over the lush, elegant slopes of Serra del Prete mountain. The recently renovated De Gasperi shelter (actually a small hotel with restaurant) was still closed by the time of our visit, while a small nearby hut was functioning as a bar. You may see small food stalls selling local cheeses and pork products (sausage, ham, coppa). If you have time to spare in your day, a stroll to the nearby (1Km) Belvedere Terrace, with wonderful views over the Morano and Castrovillari plains, and beyond over the Ionian coast, is a must.
Keep driving down for roughly 4Km up to Piano di Visitone (Viggianello Municipality), a tableau at 1,400m above the sea, with nice picnic areas available around La Baita b&b and restaurant. A stop at the bar is worthwhile (if it’s open), as is a look at the beautiful plum trees loaded with the small sour yellow-color plums, which are great for jam preparation.
Keep driving down the road, as cows and horses herds populate the countryside, then after a few Km turn right at a bifurcation, towards Voscari and Mezzana Salice country districts (San Severino Lucano municipality). In Mezzana a stop is worthwhile to enjoy the fresh air along the creeks; you will be surprised by the presence of numerous b&b and similar tourist facilities, in a location so far away from the beaten paths.
After Mezzana a bifurcation shows the way towards Terranova di Pollino, there you will have chance to make a brief (3~4Km) detour towards the sanctuary of Madonna del Pollino, for long time a center of religious cult in the middle of the Park, brimming with people during the events in July and September, long ago only reachable only on foot along pilgrimage routes (still open) from both Calabria and Basilicata side.
In Terranova di Pollino there is a mandatory culinary stop at Luna Rossa restaurant, to enjoy the surprising tasting itineraries chef Federico has been able to propose, for decades by now, to travelers from all corners.
Keep driving through the small town of Cersosimo, after which a crossroads will show you the way back in Calabria through the old town of Oriolo, don’t forget along the way to stop at panoramic points and enjoy great views over the Ionian sea, over literally dozens of Km on the opposite shoreline of the Taranto gulf. In Oriolo you have the chance to stop at the local Castle (closed for restoration at the time of our visit, but a nice view from the outside anyway) and the nearby church.
Keep driving down and reach the Ionian coast, then southwards until near Sibari you will find your way back to the A3 highway.
Enjoy the nature and the food.

This place was stunning. It cost us 15€ per person to get in, and you can only enter with a tour guide (which is provided by the park, but there are scheduled times that the groups depart). Our tour was 90 minutes, which I thought...MoreThank you very much for your detailed review. We are glad you appreciated our Caves. Hope to see you again.

This park hosts the La Storia Bandita that runs evenings from late June to the middle of September every year. This is a show with a cast of almost 500 that chronicles the events of the Briganti of Lucania in the 1860's, focusing on the life of the hero Carmine Crocco. Though it is all in Italian you will enjoy the show even if you have limited language skills.
Arrive early as the Seating fills up every night and there are several places to eat on the grounds of the park.

The waterfall is nice, but quite small. We thought that there is more to see and walked up the path on the right. After walking about 40 Minutes there is a dead end and on the whole path there is nothing special to see!
