It's the biggest of only 3 ostrich farms in Belgium. Every 3-4 years they have an open day where you can visit the whole farm. I helped out twice, last time was in 2014. The meat that you can buy there is delicious: sausages, steaks, burgers, salami, paté. They even make yummy avocado (made with the eggs that did not hatch) for your icecream.
When they have an open day, it's worth a visit. You can see the eggs, the little ostriches and the big ones. They also sell feathers, keyrings and other cute little things. Bought meat there many, many times: less cholesterol in ostrich meat !!!!

Passed the windmill while walking (the 9 kilometer Kanegem Bebloemd walk). The windmill is open on certain days and you can buy flour there. They are also on a farmers market on Wednesday. The windmill has been very well restored.

New brewery finished in 2016 and this is a great facility not only for the tour but also for the Brasserie and meeting facilities.
We were met by our guide who gave us the tour in English and explained the brewing process and history of the site. We got to sample 1 of the local beers, taste some of the specially made (beer filled) chocolates and even came away with 2 bottles of beer. We visited the shop which had an array of gifts.
15 euros is admission price - if you dine in the Brasserie and show your ticket from the tour you get a 3 euro pp discount.
We did not dine in the Brasserie but it looked lovely and we did enjoy a complimentary beer in there at the end of the tour.
Meeting facilities on site looked superb and there was a car event taking place whilst we were there.
Overall I would suggest visiting if you are passing but you do need to pre-book.

frontaal! battlefield tours : on the trail of the Great War, off the beaten paths... A long passion for the First World War, numerous reconnaissance of the Battlefields and a lot of Reading and research work resulted in 2013 in this project. 100 years later, I take interested people to the places where this horrible chapter in world history took place, and where the scars are still visible. With unique, self-edited aerial views and contemporary media, we can - more clear than ever -overlook the entire situation : where were the trenches and who was where? We walk off the beaten paths : we skip museums and the obvious monuments deliberately, but go "in the field" for a unique overview of the facts ...
In August 2015 I had the privilege of being guided by Gil. His perfect English, great knowledge and expert understanding made for a great day. We met at a prearranged place and Gil immediately made us all feel at ease.
We spent the whole day with Gil. He organised everything from food stops to a small out of the way museum that we had never heard of before. and all through the day nothing was too much trouble.
I have since met Gil on the Somme when he was with another group. The look on their faces told me that they were experiencing the same as we had a few months before.
I would recommend Frontaal! to anyone wanting to tour the Battlefields, but wanting a good guide to meet up with.

one of the most relaxing places nearby Ghent.
settle in the midst of 2 riverbanks 'Leie' you'll find an organic smallfruitfarm (raspberry,blackberry,blueberry,currant,kiwiberry,....completely pick your own.
on top of that you can just sit and relax on their Terrace and have illycoffee or thee selected by Ann Vansteenkiste or try one of their 12 different fruitjuices with a great piece of blueberrycake. probably the most relaxing summerspot near Ghent.

This is the smallest American Military Cemetery in Europe (368 graves), the only one in Belgium and located conveniently just off the busy E17 at J5. The cemetery parking area and visitor building has been refurbished/upgraded - perhaps as a result of President Obama's visit. It's worth spending time in the visitor building as there's a well produced video plus personal histories of some of those interred and details of the battles fought in and around the area - most of those interred here were killed in action in the nearby woods. The focal point is the memorial chapel in the centre of the cemetery and lists 43 names of those who were killed nearby but whose bodies were never recovered. The symmetrical lay out has 92 graves in each of the four burial sections and as is the case with all American and CWGC Cemeteries the grounds are beautifully maintained and a fitting final resting place to those who "gave their all"

Very attractive white houses in a cobbled area, which have a fascinating history of the Begijns movements . There is an interactive museum now opened which does have some information in English, although most of the exhibition is only in Flemish. There is also one house which has the inside showing how the women lived.
There is still a lot of renovation work going on all over Kortijk, but most of this area of Begijnhof St Elizabeth is now open. It is free to enter and well worth a visit . There is a cafe .
