This offshore island was occupied by the Greek colonists who fortified it and constructed the earliest structures, including the temples of Athena and Apollo, whose remains can still be seen today.
This small tongue of land concentrates the best of Syracuse history, charming and food & wine amazing choices. Ortigia assumes a very special character during the evening when main buildings and historical heritages are superbly highlighted. Regrettably, the parking area is horrible, scaring, not sufficiently illuminated and dirty. This is often the price to pay in Sicily, besides astonishing angles yo may find dirt and abandon.

The view of Mount Etna and the sea beyond is absolutely superb at Taormina's 10,000-seat ancient Greek Amphitheater, which was erected in the third century BC and expanded by the Romans.
Walked around this massive Greek theatre. Would have liked to see a performance in it as I am amazed that all these old open air relics are being used again while being restored.

The palazzo is in the center of the old city only a few steps away from the Norman Palace. the Cathedral and the Market Ballarò. The oldest part of the palace is an Arab-Norman Tower of the 12th century. You can observe verious architectural styles, high painted ceilings of the 15th century, baroque ceiling frescoes by Vito D'Anna and Gaspare Serenario, various collections and original furniture. Since Count Federico's family, which can be followed back to the Hohenstaufen Emperor Friedrich II, has lived in this palace for centuries, the personal atmosphere makes a visit to this historical building a unique experience.
Fantastic tour of historic Palazzo in Palermo. Andrea (one of the sons) led the tour in English and walked us through the rich history of the building but also of Palermo. Well worth the 10 eruos and we foudn out that you can also spend the night there through Airbnb...worth looking into!

This is THE best beach in Lampedusa. Stunning views, however, there are prettier Beaches in Greece and Spain, so it is a bit over-rated.
Be there before 9:30 am or after 1 pm, so you get a nice car parking place upstairs along the road and a spot for your parasol. You HAVE to carry everything with you (15 mins down, 20 mins up). One part of the beach is for people without parasol.
With southern winds (scirocco), you get often jellyfish that cause trouble. With stronger nothern wind sand is blasted everywhere. I imagine August is terrible and very crowded.
Afternoon visit is better, so when you come up, it not so hot. Good shoes advisable but people do it also with flip-flops. There is also a small and difficult path to the next beach.

PROS
- Sweet and wonderful donkeys who were gentle, safe and entirely non bitey
- As well as being fun to ride they patiently wait while you explore the beautiful and dramatic landscape
- Along with a host who is delightful, knowledgeable, infectious (in the sense of wonder & laughter not pathogens).
Salvatore has the soul of a poet and makes you feel connected to the volcano itself. Like Etna he is beautiful and rugged on the outside but has a heart of fire that warms your soul.
CONS
- None.
