El Fuerte de Samaipata

The archaeological site contains walls from ancient Inca dwellings.

We hired a Jeep to go to the fort while spending the weekend in Samaipata. It is said that this fort is pretty Incan and established by the ancient tribe of Change the Incas and invaded by the Guarani. Very cool day. The guide also took us to a very cool waterfall nearby.

This was one of the highlights of my trip to Bolivia. The third (most far) waterfall was extremely nice for a swim and a sun bath. Bring your swimming clothes and your towel to enjoy a few hours of total relaxation in a breath-taking nature park.

We spent the day with Javier from Kaleidoscope Travel on the Condor's Nest + Waterfall trek.
We were blessed with incredible weather which meant the day was one of our best experiences in Bolivia. The hiking in this remote and difficult to reach part of the country is stunning in its own right but, once you reach the summit and await the condors to fly overhead, you realise what a remarkable privilege it is to be there. The waterfall we visited afterwards was also one of the more impressive ones we've seen in South America.
The Colca Canyon in Peru may be better known as a condor-spotting spot in South America, but we would recommend anyone to make the effort to take this tour in Samaipata - you won't regret it.
Javier was a great, knowledgable, friendly guide with a clear passion for his job. His driving on a long day of poor roads was safe and considerate (something that's rare in Bolivia) and the vehicle was in excellent condition. The rest of the team at Kaleidoscope were professional and very helpful with all our enquiries. We would happily recommend them to anyone visiting this part of Bolivia.

Went there after recommendation and had therefore high expectations which got fulfilled 100%. They do a really good job and it's hard work but, it's definitely worth to have a lovely place like this for the animals. There is also the possibility to have drinks and they sell artesanal products as well. It's about a half hour walk from the main plaza to the south. Entry is only 20bob for adults and 10bob for kids. This place is an oasis and is perfect for families with children but as well for everybody. Highly recommended to support them.

Samaipata/Santa Cruz Road

Reviewed By roamer70 - Don Lorenzo

The "highway" from Santa Cruz to Samaipata takes you from the flat of the Lowlands through the narrow, winding and steeply enclined river valley that leads to Samaipata and the ancient El Fuerte. The road is rarely in good condition and is frequently under repair due to the many land slides the region is prone to. But the steep mountain inclines, the tumbling river that clogs the narrow valley?gorge, the picturesque villages clinging to steep mountain sides are well worth the occasional difficulty. And Samaipata's historic quality and beauty are well worth and difficulties encountered on the road.
