Like many cathedrals the tower dominates the skyline and can be seen for miles around. It has some competition from the Jesuit Chapel which has an imposing facade in brick and the white stonework.
The Cathedral tower has been recently cleaned and shines brilliantly white. The rest of the building has yet to be cleaned but remains an impressive structure.
Inside it has the most magnificent organ and many features worthy of consideration.
Well worth spending some time investigating.

We had spent the morning at Eperlecques, returned to St. Omer, seen the Cathedral, had a meal and decided that there just was not enough time to do justice to "La Coupole". Amongst the leaflets in the Tourist Office was the one for "Maison du Marais" which suggested a one hour boat trip. Just the ticket.
We really should have taken longer.
The Maison du Marais is a striking new facility on the edge of town. It houses a museum devoted to the Marais: an extensive area of wetlands which has been developed and exploited in many different ways throughout the centuries.
Sadly we arrived just in time for the last boat trip and will have to return with far more time some other time.
A one hour trip along these tranquil canals, drainage channels and ditches can only scratch the surface of this beautiful area but was lovely. Less than 100 metres from the jetty, the sounds of the traffic has dropped away and there is only the purr of the electric motor and the charming commentary and instruction of our guide. He points out, buildings, wildlife, agriculture, flora and fauna and shares information on the history and culture of the Marais. All too soon we are returning with goofy smiles having enjoyed a time-out-of-time experience so close to the modern bustle.
When we return to see the museum we will definitely repeat the boat trip.

The company offer a variety of options canoe, small rowing boats, boat with small outboard motor and a canal barge with open, outward facing Seating for 50(?).
We took one of the 1hr guided boat trips round the area and found this a pleasant way to spend sometime, the boat went mainly along small waterways but also crossed a major canal. There are no facilities on the boat or options for shelter if the weather is bad.
One problem, the narration was all in French but this did not detract from the enjoyment
Parking and toilet facilities are close to the reception and there is a Brasserie if you want something to eat before/after (this seemed very popular with the locals as well as tourists, so must be reasonable, though we did not eat there ourselves)

We took the guided 1 hour covered boat trip from Salperwick around the Audomarois (marshes). Very interesting and informative, although the commentary was only in French the driver was kind enough to give us a 5 page written commentary in English which we could follow along with our limited knowledge of French. A nice way to spend an afternoon especially if the weather is fine. although the boat was covered it was a bit breezy and a bit nippy when we went in April. We also had a meal at Le Bon Accueil restaurant where they serve typically Flemish cuisine at very reasonable prices, the boat driver (who may be the owner) spoke good English and was also in the restaurant and took the time and trouble to explain some of the dishes on the menu.

This is a wonderful construction, the Germans used forced labour to create it and Barnse Wallace destroyed it.
It was designed for the V1 and V2 rockets and lots did get fired from here but we stopped it.
Its been re-built and its now wheel chair friendly. (I have an electric wheelchair and it took 2 hrs)
Its awesome in its scale and awesome in its original job.
A brilliant afternoon

A secret base at the heart of Second World Wae history...A real underground town, constructed in 1943 and 1944 by the German army to go ahead with the launch V2 rockets on London, La Coupole is an exceptional site on which the destiny of Europe could have been played out...Today, it is an astonishing museum, a centre to gain an understanding of the historical and scientific stakes at play during the Second World War, from Occupation to the hidden face of space conquest. New! La Coupole now houses a revolutionary 3D Planetarium. Sit insite the massive 360° room wearing your active 3D glasses and travel thtough the universe...
Incredible feat of engineering in terms of the building, the bunker and the rockets. Very sad and depressing Reading about the slave labour who built it and the extreme hardship suffered by the region during WW2. Very informative videos. I knew about the Nazi's involvement...MoreIndeed, this part of History is not known enough. It is always surprising to find out about the real history of the space race and how it all began. Many thanks for your commentaries

It isn't easy to drive a 2CV, and afterwards I really was happy to drive in my current car. But it's fun and challenging and I'm very happy I tried it, once you get used to the transmission on the dashboard...
The car was in good condition, roadbook was detailed enough and luckily there was a map as well because we had a detour due to a cycling race.
Even though is was a rainy day it's a very nice region to cruise around...

The location is very close to the town and is dramatic. The park is built into the old town ramparts and includes flower Gardens and a range of walks. It would be great for picnicking.
