No need to reiterate the five star reviews. Just wanted to add that although trip advisor says this is the number one site in Piazza Armerina for visitors, this was my number one site to visit in all of Sicily. The temples at Agrigento come second. I have been to Pompei and to Ostia Antica but was blown away by the diversity and extent of the mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale. And they are still uncovering more. Sure, you have to make the effort to get there but the drive, in the pouring rain there and back, did not lessen the impression of these fantastic mosaics. The two negatives are that you have to pay for parking and that, although all the explanatory panels in each room are in Italian and English, the lighting was insufficient at times to read them. Do make the effort to go to the Villa. You won't be disappointed.

Everyone goes to Piazza Armerina to see the mosaics of the Roman Villa, but beware! don't leave Piazza Armerina without seeing this tiny but wonderful museum of objects that the owner Mario Albanese found mostly in the trash! These objects give a remarkable picture of what life was like for Sicilian peasants up until about 100 years ago. Our favorites were: the cradle suspended over the bed, the toys, the instruments for making bread, ricotta, and other cooking equipment, the slipware bowls (the maiolica of the poor), all narrated by Mario with enthusiasm and devotion.

This Roman villa was the highlight of a week exploring Sicily. There are fifty or sixty rooms of stunningly well-preserved mosaics. A landslide preserved them from destruction (a mini Pompeii). I have never witnessed a Roman mosaics on such a scale. It's a UNESCSO site.

The Cathedral majestic dome dominates the city, so the visit there is inevitable. An example of the typical Sicilian Baroque architecture with a fragment of gothic architcture - rests of the pre-existing church of XV century.
Despite of the presence of important paintings, icons and masterpieces of prominent authors inside the Cathedral, such as Adoration of the Magi, Ascension of the Virgin Mary, Death of St. Agatha, a notable 15th century painted wooden cross, a Byzantine icon of Madonna of Victory and other treasures, we were pained by seeing the pity conditions in which this church interiors and some of the paintings are. All this cultural heritage is deteriorated by the mould and humidity. A real pity.

This small museum is dedicated to the suphur mineries of Grottacalda that used to be an important economy pillar and working place for many people in Piazza Armerina. The museum contains labour objects, photos and reconstructions that tell the story of the work, as well as holding the collection of minerals of unusual forms and sizes from different parts of the world. We were invited to have a look by the guide who used to work in the minery and knows what it was like.

Wine shop and more! The shopkeeper was warm and welcoming. She gave us tastings and explanations of local products and even provided a map and suggestions of what to see and when sites were open. We left with her recommendations promising to come back after sightseeing. Upon our return we got local desert wines, cookies, and pistachio spreads. Very high quality and we were pleased. They also have beautiful ceramics. I recommend you come here when in town.
