Chiesa di Santa Maria del Sasso

Some 400 steps above the charming village of Morcote with its small alleys, ancient houses and waterfront quays stands this beautiful church dating back to the 13th century, rebuilt in 1462 in the Renaissance style and subsequently renovated with baroque style. Both the church and the adjacent Chapel Sant' Antonio do Padova (1676) with its unusual octagonal floor plan exhibit beautiful frescoes and carvings. There is a beautiful view from the church over Morcote, the Lago di Lugano and the surrounding hills, partially situated in Italy. The view gets actually even better if you climb the path behind the church up to a little square with a bronze statue of a Madonna. On the way up you get very good angles to photograph both the church tower and the lake. From the square on top you can also access the interesting cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale) and walk back to the village through the cemetery.

Borgo Antico

We found the tourist information center after alighting from the bus from Lugano. The lady was helpful in telling us the attractions to visit in our limited time in the town. Morcote is more Italian than Swiss. Pictureresque is the best word to describe it. The cafes and stores along the town center would trick your mind that you are in the Mediterranean than in Switzerland.

We had good gelato while we waited for the scheduled bus back to Lugano.

Beautiful quiet and though-provoking cemetery attached to the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Sasso, built in terraces into the steep slope overlooking the picturesque village of Morcote, the Lago di Lugano and the surrounding hillsides. Exhibiting many family graves, some of them of famous individuals and very interesting pieces of sculptures. Definitely worth visiting and spending some time here in contemplation. See this in combination with a visit to the church Santa Maria del Sasso.

Oratorio Di Sant'Antonio

Reviewed By Augusta Maria C - Province of Monza and Brianza, Italy

Reviewed By Augusta Maria C - Province of Monza and Brianza, Italy
