Caves of Heaven and Hell

Reviewed By Lanni_12 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Only short walk to reach Hell and it is a super huge hole in the ground, nothing special and easy. But difficult, ups-and-down, slippery, dark cave, but worthy because the Heaven cave was located in deep valley where we could find also old small church and a river under ground. The way to reach Heaven is so rich of vegetation and kind-of-forest full of trees. Good as a wake up call that I need to exercise more :-)
Sport comfortable shoes will be helpful.

Narlikuyu

Reviewed By kozin58 - Toronto, Canada

Narlıkuyu is a part of ancient Roman Cilicia. It is 21 km eastbound of Silifke and 77 km westbound of Mersin. You can visit the small mosaic museum and Heaven and Hell chasms (Cennet-Cehennem) and the Asthma Cave, as well, all located very near each other. Don't forget to have a lunch or dinner if you like seafood if you are not a budget traveller.

Kiz Castle

Reviewed By 1alwaystraveling - Richmond, Virginia

First, Kizkalesi Castle is the one off the coast. The Mainland one they call Korykos Castle, but both are a stones throw away from each other. Just an absolutely beautiful place, with such history and ancient engineering mastery. Over 2000 years old, and still standing. Unfortunately the Turkish gov't has not put enough efforts into preserving such a grand monument to the past. The walls are mostly still standing and showing their might and craftsmanship. Two sides of the main castle run along the Mediterranean Sea and the views from the arrow slits and windows of the castle are amazing. Walls of the armory are mostly together (believe it is on the north side, largest square building near one of the entrances that looks to have been carved to have a moat. But the beach side is very much showing its age, but has the best view of the castle built on a small island just 2000 meters off the shore line just south. They light the both Castles up at night which is a memorizing effect To tour the main castle, it is $5 local, or about $1.65 US, or just about one Euro. Great way to spend an afternoon thinking of the muscle power and genius it took to build such a structure thousands of decades ago. All interior portions have unfortunately been demolished or have not stood the test of time.

Totally deserted and amazing. We had it all to ourselves and visited in the evening when it was cooler. A perfect visual journey of how one civilization builds over another. Perfect Roman mosaics, unearthed, having been covered by a Byzantine Church. A wonderful small Amphitheatre. History was just pouring out of this place.

CambazlI Kilisesi

Reviewed By Lanni_12 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

A relatively difficult to find beautiful Roman church (??) in the middle of villages in Mersin. Only with car - no public transport - we were able to reach and see this ruin which was almost surrounded by tomato farms in the late autumn.
The church has preserved the original arches, half domes, and pillars. Still beautiful! Pity that the inside was dirty and lot of garbage. Very less tourist, we saw only three other visitors
