We looked at the Cathedral and the archaeological site this summer and thought that the small Statue of Athena was on display in the museum. Unfortunately it was locked away somewhere so we missed it! Despite that it is a well restored area and a good defensive position with excellent views along the coast. I hope the statue will be on display next year?

I am genuinely baffled by the positive reviews for this rip off 'attraction'. There are very few stalactites/stalagmites and they are very uninteresting and dirty-coloured. Our guide didn't speak any English so we had the experience of standing around underground in almost complete darkness with nothing to look at while he told some apparently hilarious anecdotes in rapid and impossible-to-follow Italian, breaking off occasionally to scream 'no flash' at anyone who dared try to take a picture.
For this dubious privilege we had to pay not only for entry but for parking too. Clearly we are missing something because there are literally hundreds of parking places (almost all empty in late September).

The walk around the walls is a must as it helps to scale the town in your mind. You will pass the old Messepian walls and see the scale of the stones laid there. The walk continues around the south side and the terraces are delightful. A good spot for a picnic or just to rest as there are some seats.

Over three years we have been to this Piazza full of character & great views. This year we were able to see inside the Cathedral as it was open. The frescoes visible outside are very interesting - I am sure there must be more interesting crypts as well?

What I find the most interesting about this site is that the archeologists uncovered the access to the ancient fortification and had to stop just 10 metres below a new modern house on the edge of the old town. What would they have found if they could have continued to dig ? View the ancient torso of the goddess Athena in the old castle. The archeologists were still working there when we visited in April but we were told that funds to continue were running out. It's a very small site but does more to spark the imagination when you consider the dramatic coastline and hsitory of this ancient city.

I consider myself a very experienced traveller who backpacked half of world. But didn't find how to approach this location however tried many ways. As I travelled with small childrens decided to stop searching after half hour.
If you want to visit it try to find in time the correct way and good indications.

Piccolo gioiello del XVI secolo. Piazza cinta dalle mura messapiche con pavimentazione in pietra originale. Un silenzio assordante di giorno, un angolo di relax all'imbrunire

Excellent position & view over the sea to the north. There is a compass in the middle of the Piazza which shows the dominant winds (by direction)
