The old port is a thing of true beauty. Just the looks of it can travel you centuries back to medival times.Nice cafez all around and even better restaurants. Misses perfection however when it is SO overcrowded. People and cars and streets and pavements become one during some nights lowering and diminishing the very essence of the castle- port.

The Monastery of Proussos was named after the Icon of Panagia Prousiotissa from Prousa in Minor Asia, according to a legend painted by Luke the Evangelist. It is 31 km north of Karpenisi. It was build in the 9th century (some say 12th century). According to a legend the monastery was founded during the period of the Byzantine Emperor Theophilos (829-842) who was an iconoclast ( against the use of icons). To protect the icon it was decided by supporters of the use of icons to move it to a safe place. The two persons responsible to find a place for the icon who came in Proussos decided to stay here and to build a monastery, and they were the first monks who changed their names to Dionysios and Timotheos. According to legends they decided the place due to miracles that happened due to the icon and because they could not move the icon to another place.Part of the monastery was destroyed 1587 by a fire. During the Greek war of independence it was a refuge place of various heroes such as Giorgos Karaiskakis, Markos Botsaris or Lambros Katsonis. A large part of the monastery was destroyed , including many books and documents, by fire set by German troops in the second world war.
We are travel from Volos to Prousso monastery with VolosVipTaxi.gr the ride is beautiful crossing the Mainland of Central Greece. Traditional village and amazing landscape. We arrive after 2.1/2 hours in the most beautiful and amazing monastery Prousou. The buildings are build on the end off the cliff. The church is build in the rock of the mountain and that make the place unique. I highly recommend to visit Prousou & Karpenisi the small city with the ski center.

This bridge is a marvel of modern engineering at its very best. It connects Mainland Greece with the Peloponnese region which is in effect an island, as its only "connection" by land to the Mainland was cut and became, in the late 19th century, the Corinth Canal. The bridge is 3 kms long and joins the town of Rio, on the Peloponnese, with the town of Antirio on the side opposite, on the Mainland. The amazing thing is that the area on which the bridge stands, is of very high seismic activity, and very frequent earthquakes take place there. This was just one of the many challenges that the builders faced and obviously solved. Also the ground where the bridge stands is really unstable and the engineers had to find some ingenious ways to stabilise the bridge. Special cables are used to suspend the bridge, making it the longest in the world of its type. The pylons that hold the bridge stand on reinforced concrete bases , which in turn stand on a gravel layer on the sea floor. There are many other amazing facts about this wondrous bridge. So it is not just 'another bridge'. We have crossed this bridge on a number of occasions, during our visit to Greece and have been absolutely amazed by this engineering wonder. The views as you approach the bridge are absolutely stunning, as they are while crossing it. It is quite an experience, especially when you know the story behind its building, which (story) by the way began about one hundred years ago, and only materialised in recent times, on time, in fact, for the Athens Olympics in 2004.

The Garden of Heroes commemorates a moment during the Greek War of Independence, when the town was besieged for the third time by Ottoman forces. After a heroic, year-long defence the heavily outnumbered Greeks, with philhellene supporters from other countries, tried to break out and were killed. They had been betrayed. To Greek people, this is the Sacred City of Missolonghi.
Around a wide, low burial mound, where many of the fighters were buried, white marble statues stand, some modern, some older, in memory of particular fighters. The one most non-Greek visitors will be particularly interested in is the one of Lord Byron. To my mind, it is best to visit the garden in the gloaming, ideally with a light drizzle falling. Then, you feel the tall white statues looming up against the dark trees almost as ghostly presences, each with his own ideals and thoughts. An extraordinary and deeply moving experience.
The garden is easy to find. Come off the motorway and follow the signs for Messolonghi. Drive on towards the town until you come to a point where there's a wall in front of you, with trees behind it, and you have to turn left or right. That - the trees - is the Garden of Heroes. The main entrance is on the far side, so turn right and just follow the wall round. Park anywhere.

Do not miss this stunning museum! Thermon was the capital of the ancient Aetolian league and the archaic temple of Apollon thermios was amongst the first Greek temples. The recently opened museum is very impressive and gives a brilliant overview of its long history from prehistory to Hellenistic times. The landscape is pristine and innocent. Ένα μουσείο κόσμημα. Παρουσιάζει επαρκώς όλη τη μακραίωνης διαδρομή της αιτωλικης συμπολιτειας και του ιερού του θερμιου Απόλλωνα.

This is a lovely small version of some of the beautiful pebbled Beaches on Lefkada (i.e. Katsiki) and accessible from Palairos by bike. The small beach bar is good for snacks after a long ride, and the beach chairs are complimentary. I could have done without the pulsating euro techno but, with a setting as beautiful as this I couldn't even complain. It's pretty clean although I had to rescue a chip bag from the crystalline waters. Recommended for a lazy day!
