One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the Mountains like a glove. Whooshing Waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier!
Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is a 48 km scenic drive in the Hohe Tauern National Park. It costs 35.50 EUR per car. Highlights include:
1) Edelweissspitze Panorama station
2) Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hohe vantage station
3) 1.5 hour Gamsgrubenweg from the vantage station to Wasserfallwinkel
4) 30 min Swarovski-Warte panoramic trail around the vantage station
5) 1.5 hour Pasterzenweg from the vantage station to Pasterze glacier (funicular costs 11 EUR extra each way)
We did the scenic drive on a beautiful sunny day in July. The road condition was excellent, and the views were wonderful. We saw marmots at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hohe vantage station. The Swarovski-Warte trail was not very interesting, while Gamsgrubenweg was very scenic and enjoyable. We wanted to do Pasterzenweg but the additional cost of the funicular upset us. Didn't we already pay 35 EUR? We read that the founder of the Hohe Tauern National Park was inspired by Yellowstone and Yosemite in the US, and these national parks cost $25-30 for 7 days. This was 35 EUR for 1 day, plus extra for the funicular. It was just a bit too much.

This was a truly fantastic day. Wonderful scenery made even better by the sun shining. Our trip was guided by a park ranger whose knowledge proved invaluable to making this a truly memorable day. Even saw several marmots to make the day complete. Well worth doing.

To be honest this is the only attraction in Heiligenblut, but a nice one. I like this pointy Austrian churches, as they rise from the lovely villages. This one with the surrounding valley and the Mountains is like a trade-mark. The church's cemetery is worth a visit too.

While staying in Heiligenblut we took the gondola to Bergbahn Schareck to enjoy the views and possibly do some hiking. The views did not disappoint however due to the fact that we were above the tree line the hiking was not as good as we thought it would be. One of the highlights however, was that we could see the top of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road from Schareck and were able to take pictures of the road as it went over the mountain and through the tunnels.

This park is at the end of the grossglockner road. So you can not go any further. You have to return back form this point. The park is lively and full of people who came to view the grossglockner summit.

We visited Goldgräberdorf Heiligenblut in June, which is on the Grossglockner High Alpine road. It is open from 10 until 5 and it costs 8 Euros without the Kärnten Card. ( with the card it is free). We got our pans, shovel and boots and a lady showed us how do we should pan for gold. It was soooo much fun!

der Weg nach oben ist ganz schön steil, man sollte festees Schuhwerk haben ,
man kann sehr schön den Wasserfall von einer Plattform sehen
