Unawatuna is a coastal town in Galle district of Sri Lanka. Unawatuna is a major tourist attraction in Sri Lanka and famous for its beautiful beach and corals. It is a suburb of Galle, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) southeast to the city center and approximately 108 kilometres (67 mi) south of Colombo. Unawatuna is situated at an elevation of 5 metres (16 ft) above the sea level.

Welcome to Sea Turtle Hatchery - Mahamodara. We rescue turtles who are in danger of loosing their lives to the fishing industry whether they are caught in nets or hunted for meat. We currently have 40 turtles, including 4 types of turtle. All are welcome to come and visit to see and learn about Tara turtles here in Sri Lanka.

Well worth stopping off. Only small as is the entry fee of 500l. A guide explains about the different types of turtles and shows various ones that have been rescued by fishermen. They also hatch eggs and release young turtles into the see thus helping their survival. Only spent about 20 minutes but well worth the time

The Japanese Peace Pagoda stands prominently on a small hill overlooking the ocean. Painted brilliant white, it is highly visible for miles. This beautiful structure was built by Japanese Buddhist monks in 2005, paid for by the people of Japan and opened to the public by President Rajapaksa. It was built as a peace temple for the people of Sri Lanka at a time when the civil war was raging. It also commemorates the loss of 16 Japanese students at Yala in the 2004 tsunami.
There is no doubt that it is a peaceful place to walk around and provides a good view of the ocean and glorious sunset. There is a little sign warning you to remove your shoes, not to eat or smoke nor to use your mobile phone. There is a Buddhist shrine next to the pagoda and you are allowed in if appropriately dressed. It is free to enter but donations are expected.

Very nice walk on the “walls of Galle”. Historical site with excellent views of ocean and inland. Plenty of refreshment sites and beautiful colonial style buildings and hotels. Take a walk through Pedlar street “shopping street”. Local art/clothing etc. at decent prices.

The history of Galle extends thousands of years to biblical times. In more recent times it was a prize to be possessed for western traders in search of wealth and glory. Its beautifully preserved colonial Dutch fort with its quaint city with cobblestone streets within is a place time forgot. Close by are magnificent Beaches, rainforests and other attractions. It is definitely a fascinating place to visit.

The captain will set the sails around the Galle Fort and its lighthouse, where you will get a magnificent view of the old fort, then we will sail to Unawatuna bay near the Japanese Pagoda. The Captain will drop the anchor in Jungle beach. There you can swim, snorkel and do some stand up paddle board with our life guard. While you enjoy the water, the Chef takes out the plancha-BBQ.

We went Sailing for the first time ,and it was fantastic experience truely ...
We were staying @hikkaduwa, but the team (Alexandre) arranged for a pick and drop from our villa to Beruwala ...
The crew of the ship were really good , they not only helped us make our experience memorable, but took really good care of us.
We sailed with a movie crew, so that itself made it so assorted , we were really pampered . Crew member Kumaran deserves special mention, as he took us around the island and helped us spot the best corals and fishes around . On our way back , we had music , food ,some drink s ,and clicked loads of pictures with crew :)

Can be reached by the Colombo-Galle (A2) main Motor road, the Southern Expressway as well as by the southern Railway line that presently runs from Colombo to Matara via Galle. Unawatuna too is fringed by lush groves of coconut palm trees. However it has a rare geographical occurrence: on either end of the bay you can see headlands. At Unawatuna , with a bit of luck the tourists may witness turtles laying eggs along the shore. Diving also affords the opportunity to enjoy the sight of these magnificent sea turtles swimming around in the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Now with the new beach.
And all the little huts moved off the beach.
UNAWATUNA BEACH.
Is back to its natural look.
Very smart.plenty of choice for food.
The only thing spoiling this beautiful place.
Is the road.looking a bit scruffy now.
Due to the heavy traffic.
And garbage problem.

Definitely worth a visit if in Unawatuna, as the beach is lovely and relatively secluded, without tons of restaurants like Unawatuna main beach. There is a small beach bar with drinks and some food choices and sun loungers.
Getting there - follow signs from Unawantuna foot paths. You will be walking on a trail through the jungle until you get to a first beach (this is not Jungle Beach). From here, go to the end of this first beach and find the trail entry point to walk another 10 minutes to Jungle Beach. Total hike time is approximately 30-45 minutes. You will be walking on rocky trails - doable in flip flops if you're used to it; wear sneakers if you're not comfortable walking on uneven terrains. Recommended to go either in the morning or late afternoon to avoid mid-day heat.

As a Dutch citizin impressed by the history of the many gravestones. The church conservator told us a lot of the backgrounds. To the contrary of the other forts we visited this belongs to the one you should visit. A time als to relax from the heat in this time of the year.

Purely designed for the tourists, but a good use of an old building. Plenty of places to check out and stop off for a light refreshment, although there are places cheaper in the old town. Nice tea and coffee shops and very clean.
