Canyon del Sumidero well worth the visit especially when in combination with the various look out points from the canyon rim above. Just wish there was more floating trash control and removal. Must be hard to keep up. Schools can do their part but respect for the environment has to start at home.

On a day long trip to the falls and Montebello lakes.
The falls are clean, spotless, seemingly endless. A great guide provided gratis.
We hiked to the top, incredible views and colors. A short chance to swim in chilly waters.
An incredible outing! But, not for physically unfit since it's a trek.

We took our children to this zoo on a very hot summer day and it was a great experience!. The dense foliage provides relief from the Chiapas heat as well as creating a tropical oasis in the middle of a huge city. I really forgot that I was in an urban center while visiting this zoo. We come from San Diego, which has a world class zoo, so I rarely visit other zoos while traveling, but the allure of ZooMAT is that all the animals are specific to the region. Some animals are free-roaming, which was fun for the children. There are lot of smaller exhibits along with big, natural enclosures for the larger animals. It definitely feels like you're walking through their natural habitat. We were excited to see animals we'd only previously seen on TV :) My personal favorites were the coatimundi and the tapir. This is definitely a must-see while in Tuxtla!

My sister and I recently spent three days in Tuxtla after studying Spanish for two weeks in San Cristobal de las Casas. The first place we visited was marimba park on a Sunday night. We were delighted with the cool breezes blowing through the trees throughout the park, the colorful attire of the people, the range of ages involved and the friendliness of everyone in the park. The music started at a slower pace and then the beat picked up. Lots of people were dancing, others just relax and enjoy beautiful winter evening in the park. This is the best way to keep cool on a warm night in Tuxtla. Different marimba bands play every night of the week. Arrive before 6 o'clock to get a seat. Plenty of different places to eat or have coffee around the perimeter of the park. Not to be missed! No charge either!

We were so lucky to visit the first day of the 3 day annual fiesta (January 21-23) commemorating the defiant last stand by the local Indians against the Spanish Conquistadores. Several hundred apparently chucked themselves over the side of the Sumidero Canyon and into the river Grijalva rather than submit. What a fantastic sight met us, the streets were festooned with those lovely Mexican flags, there was an enormous market selling all sorts of locally handmade gifts and so many stalls etc selling food and drink. In addition all the local people were dressed in their beautiful embroidered garments which are commemorated on the entry to the town by the statue of a Chiapa de Corzo lady wearing her traditional dress. What noise, what fun, what excitement. It is difficult to say what it is like other days as it was so crowded we could only laugh and join in the fun. We could only see the outside of the local church which was built of brick and looked rather grand as it had been damaged by the September earthquake, I wonder if it survived the recent one?

This is a very informative and very affordable museum which is certainly worth visiting. However, you will be offered a free (tips only) marimba concert in one of the museum smaller rooms. This event will most probably be the loudest musical event of your entire life. Your ear drums might be permanently damaged. Beware! - I am sure that the three performers are half-deaf and are unaware of what they damage they are causing.

This small but charming museum is just off of the main plaza in downtown Tuxtla. You'll learn about how coffee first came to Mexico, how much us produced in various states, and even about coffee's health benefits. I was surprised to learn that despite being a large coffee producer and exporter, Mexico's per capita coffee consumption is actually rather low. Admission is 25 pesos, quite a bargain, and includes a cup of freshly brewed coffee, but a nice coffee shop on the premises would be a good idea.

About a 2 1/2 hour drive from Tuxtla just off highway 226 are the Chiflon Waterfalls. Spectacular Waterfalls and rapids, zipline, nice small restaurant - there are 2 entrances and each takes you up a different side of the falls. Bit of a hike up but lots of places to rest and you can zipline down over part of the falls. We hired a guide - well worth it - works for a gratuity. We went off-season before vacation and during rainy season so the volume of water was huge. 3 larger falls and a series of rapids. The highest and final one you see is "Velo de Novia". If you take the first entrance (smaller on the north side) you will be standing at an observation deck right beside the falls (you will get wet). The southern (larger) entrance gives you views of the falls from across the river.

The day we were there most of the rooms were closed, but the archaeological section was open. Chiapas is home to quite a few Mayan ruins, Palenque being the most famous. This part of the museum was not large but the collection was definitely worth the visit and it was well displayed.

This museum is pretty much what one would expect to find in a provincial state capitol. Signs all in Spanish, nice but not impressive archeological finds, a decent history section. It was deserted when I was there.
