Top 10 Things to do in St. Moritz, Switzerland

August 4, 2017 Vergie Nakamoto

Although originally known as a summer destination, when the first snowflakes land in St. Moritz, so do the international scenesters, bundled up in the latest "Must Have" accessories. During winter, catch a ride on the Glacier Express from Zermatt to arrive in style. Cable cars ascend to three nearby mountaintops. Hundreds of miles of ski trails and a frozen lake comprise the area's most popular sports venues. Follow the Romans example and try one of the city's mineral springs, such as St. Moritz Bader.

We went to the alpine resort village of St. Moritz and enjoyed the cable car ride and breathtaking views of the snow-covered Mountains.
Considering that St. Moritz has twice hosted the Winter Olympics, we decided that the world-championship downhill ski runs were a little too challenging for us. However, we did enjoy some cross-country skiing and the amazing mountain scenery.

Corvatsch is the tallest "local" mountain in St. Moritz, and it absolutely pays to take the trip up to the very top. Although the "glacier walk" was closed when we were there, the views are simply spectacular.

Muottas Muragl

Reviewed By MartinChieGeorgina - Derry, United Kingdom

Muottas Muralgl is built high in the Mountains and can be reached only by train, cycling or walking. There is only one Muottas Muralgl and if you are in the Engadine Valley then the experience of travelling up to this hotel, restaurant, viewing platform and hiking gateway into the high Alps above St Moritz is not to be missed. I had lunch here with some good friends who appreciate and can afford the better things in life, they loved the gourmet food ( we had Venison) , the restaurant table we were allocated allowed a view of St Moritz, and the lakes to Silverplanna and Italy beyond. After lunch we marvelled at the View from the modern totally refurbished viewing platform and hiked to view Samedan Airport far below. The train runs every 30 minutes and is an experience in itself as it climbs steeply up the mountainside allowing commanding views all around. Costs about 25CHF return, your arrival point station is newly refurbished as is the Romantik group hotel, Restaurant, and luxurious outdoor Terrace. There’s a children’s play area, free use of Blacksea type sheltered reclining lylows, mankind hiking trails are signposted from here through the Mountains. Visit Muottas Muralgl, you will not be disappointed!! It’s just awesome, seeing is believing!!!

This is great to see when its snowing. Very busy with skiers and snowboarders. The first funicular goes from St Moritz to Chantarella which is right near the town center. You then board another one from Chantarella to Corviglia. You can stop here or get on the cable car which takes you to the top at Piz Nair where there is a restaurant and you can walk around it outside for some great views. Check times. When we went, its the same price in the afternoon to go to the top as it is to go to Corviglia. Well worth the trip.

Lake St. Moritz

Reviewed By Genjackson57 - New York City, New York

Can you imagine adding a park in the heart of a town that is 0.78km2 every winter? The ice is thick enough to support horse racing, polo, speed skating, cricket and other sports with large crowds watch? That is the magic of Lake St. Moritz...add to that the New Year’s Eve fireworks that are safely fired from the middle of the frozen lake as the entire population marvels and you start to grasp the wonder that is Lake St. Moritz.
It is a favorite open walking space with families and dogs. There are ice skiing ovals for the public with vans that rent skates for the day. Charming small resturants and hotels offer delicious food or pastries with hot chocolate with beautiful views of the lake.
All this is possible because the large snowfall on the lake is groomed and packed down to make it a delightful place to stroll. This also allows the race track surface to be prepared for the exciting, spectacular races on the snow. Not to be missed!

Segantini Museum resides in a medieval tower and it's out of the way from other attractions but still it's an interesting place to visit if you're into classical art. The museum is quite small with its highlight being a huge Life, Nature and Death triptych. You'll certainly remember it. Unfortunately they don't accept Swiss Museum Pass.

Piz Bernina

The highest peak in the eastern Alps.

Amazing rail trip over the alps from St Moritz down into Tirano. Clear, sunny summer day made for a great train trip. The Bernina line has overcome extreme terrain to give passengers a wonderful view of steep-sided Mountains, narrow passes, picture-postcard villages in deep Valleys, Bridges and viaducts, even a circular one. The carriages are made for scenic viewing with large glass windows extending into the roof. The train descends to Tirano where it travels within metres of the front doors of houses. A great way to spend a day!

It is pricey, but well organised and a great atmosphere. Everyone friendly. Our driver and brakeman were awesome. The experience was outstanding- such an adrenaline rush. G- forces are unbelievable. Downside- traveling at 130kph, it is over too quickly. However, that is eased by the complimentary glass of bubbly!
