Our Group of 4 recently biked the self-guided version of "The Charming Pousadas in Alentejo". It was a great trip. Cristina was very helpful. Great places to stay. Excellent breakfast meal included in cost of trip.
The self-guided trip navigation relies on Reading and following the provided GPS. Two GPSs were helpful. Good documentation also provided on paper, but you need to do the homework prior to using both methods. Also it is helpful to know some of the helpful Portuguese phrases.

National Palace of Queluz

Royal residence of two generations of monarchs, only fifteen minutes away from Lisbon, the National Palace of Queluz is intimately linked with significant figures in Portuguese history. Today it constitutes a major heritage site in Portuguese architecture and landscaping, and contains an important collection which reflects royal taste during the eighteenth and nineteenth century - from Baroque, through Rococo, to Neoclassicism.

Amazing palace modeled on Versailles, and in the process of major restoration and renovation. Interior done with the level of detail you would expect in a palace, with inlaid tile, marble, lead crystal chandeliers, hand worked rugs, some original furniture, paintings and more gold leaf than you can imagine (unless you've been to Versailles). Mini Hall of Mirrors, too. Beautiful Gardens, National treasure with a facinating history.

KidZania Lisboa

KidZania is an indoor theme park designed for children between 3 and 15 years old and their parents. It's a kid-sized replica of a real city where children play adult roles in a highly realistic environment. They can choose between more than 60 different professions which are practiced in replicas of the most representative establishments of an actual city: airport, factories, theatre, shops, racetrack, police station, fire department, press, TV studio, stadium and many more. The activities are designed to be fun and pedagogical, based on the edutainment -education + entertainment- concept. Its contents are developed according to school programmes and seek to teach the children citizenship values and rules, helping them to live in society in a healthy way.

Kidzania concept is absolutely amazing. A place where both adults and children will have a great time, as children try different professions and adults have a pleasure of observing their children working at different jobs. As we don't have such a unique place in the U.S., we brought our children to Kidzania during our visit to Lisbon. Our children don't speak Portuguese, thus some jobs were out of reach. Also, unfortunately many Kidzania employees didn't speak English, some were sometimes rude when children didn't understand them. It is Portugal and people speak Portuguese, but given that there are so many international visitors with children coming to Lisbon, it would be wise hiring employees who speak proper English during regular days or at least have "English speaking days during a week" as it is done in some Kidzania's around the world. Kidzania teaches children about the world. Communication skills are one of the most import skills for any profession, thus some signs in English or additional exposure to English speaking visitors would make Kidzania more realistic. Despite all, Kidzania in Lisbon is surely a place you want to bring your children and with some improvement from a management, this place would be extraordinary.

No expense was spared when they built this masterpiece of Manueline and Gothic architecture in 1502, which was inspired by Vasco da Gama who is buried here with other great navigators of the past.

Downtown, on the waterfront in Lisbon is the beautiful massive historic monastery, Jeronimos Monastery. Built as a thank you by King Manual to celebrate maritime discoveries, it houses the ornate limestone tomb of Vasco De Gama This was my first encounter with Manualine architecture and decor, with twisted rope carved into many walls and above each archway. The decor also includes carved tropical fruit and animals. Afterwards, I looked for this style of decor in many churches and public buildings and found it! Interesting intellectually, stunning visually, and well worth a visit! Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds...

One of the biggest squares in Europe, this stylish area in downtown Lisbon often displays beautiful works of art and sculpture, and is a great place for a leisurely stroll.

Long ago there used to be a famous landmark (Royal Rebeira Palace) on this site but it came tumbling down in the devastating 1755 earthquake. Lisbon began rebuilding its city immediately and designated this site as a commercial downtown center in the shape of a large U. The new center is near the banks of the wide, wide Tagus River and is one of Lisbon's great landmarks.
We were taken here and walked a lot, enjoying the classical architecture and beauty of this public space.
