The river is a peaceful walk along stepping stones. Bring binoculars, but I did not see any kingfishers on my visit. Maps are available at the tourist information area near the train station.

Walk from Mishima Station, about 1 hour. Kakita-River Park is a spring water park by the underflow water of Mt. Fuji. Enjoy and explore the abundant spring waters and lush greenery. You can see the big Mt.Fuji. There are water park for children to play, big parking, Japanese Soba restaurant and clean toilets.

Unbelievable views of Mount Fuji, the ocean, and surrounding Mountains! There's a restaurant as well as free foot hot spring both facing Mount Fuji... breathtaking! Lots of short little easy trails with little things to see. A very short walk from the bus stop (10 minutes 170 yen from Izu-Nagaoka Station, no SUICA). We spent about an hour up top. The cable car is a bit scary but totally worth it! Highly recommend on a clear day!

While staying with friends in Mishima we were taken to see this lovely Shinto Shrine.
Quite a decent size complex with a lot of very old history, some lovely stone carvings and well set up & maintained Gardens
At the front entrance which is right on the main road you go through a great stone Tori Gate, a bit further on to the left is a little island area in the waterway which contain a very attractive small shrine with an amazing curved lantern.
There were plenty of priests and their helpers about all dressed in traditional clothes as there were three weddings happening, the brides and grooms all looked great in their traditional wedding outfits.
Easy place to get too right in town and a must place to visit , we loved it .

Hours of Operation will be changed to 10:00-19:00 in July and August.
This looked fascinating: a deep sea aquarium! Not just any fish, but weird creatures from the bottom of the sea. And the fact that the aquarium only had Japanese reviews made it even more mysterious.
Only one drawback: the city of Numazu is very difficult to reach. From Tokyo it takes two local trains, a Shinkansen (high speed train) and a lengthy taxi ride. The alternative is to travel by car, which takes about 120 minutes (do mind the extremely expensive toll roads!).
The deep sea aquarium is located in Numazu because this city is located between the highest mountain of Japan (mount Fuji) and the deepest sea. Several of the fish on display have been caught by local fisherman.
The aquarium takes up two storeys of which only the bottom one houses live animals (fish, crustacean, molluscs and more). So the name "deep sea museum" might be more appropriate, because half of the creatures on display are dead. The others live at a depth of up to 500 metres and seem to be in good health in the aquarium. Tanks are cooled and/or kept in the dark if appropriate. Most impressive is the pitch black tank with light emitting fish. Do not expect any big, weird creatures from the deep lurking around.
The centre piece of the aquarium consists of two frozen and three stuffed coelacanths plus a lot of documentation about them.
If you like Aquariums and you want to see something different, then this is the place to go. On request the staff will hand out an English booklet and the names of all the fish are displayed in both English and Japanese.

After our disappointing visit to Awashima the day before, we weren't sure what to expect at Sea Paradise. It turned out to be much more lively though, with better-maintained exhibits, animals that performed their tricks well (if you're into that sort of thing) and actually some crowds - no ghost-town atmosphere at all. In fact, at one point I was surprised to see it was built in around 1977, it feels somewhat newer than that (although there's some obvious signs of age around).
Dolphin show was one of the more impressive that I've seen, particularly the lady Surfing on the back of dolphins and high jumping off their snouts. Between shows, it is possible and relatively cheap to take a small row boat ride in the dolphin pool and to pat them (my daughter tells me their skin feels like eggplant). The more adventurous can also be in the boat during one of the dolphin shows, which I've never seen at an aquarium before.
Other shows were similarly impressive and a bit unusual. For example there is an absolutely huge sea lion, who wasn't being entirely co-operative but eventually pulled off some surprising stunts considering how big he was. Disturbing on some level, but still compelling viewing.
There were some other random things the kids enjoyed, like Halloween dress up costumes to try on free and take photos of. Photos were also taken by the aquarium staff on entry and in the dolphin boat rides. We would have liked to have those, and the quality was good, but they were asking 1,000 yen each, which is absurd. We probably would have bought them at 500 yen each.
Penguins looked a bit sad, and some of the tank exhibits were not nearly as good as in world-class Aquariums, but for a small town location in Japan this ended up being surprisingly good overall. Food at the cafeteria was quick but not particularly good quality. On the other hand, jellyfish icecream served near the dolphin pool was really quite tasty!

The port has some nice seafood shops and restaurants which is what Numazu is famous for. Parking can be a little difficult at peak times however. There is also an aquarium which I didn't visit as it looked a little small for the price (1600 yen for one adult).
Overall worth a visit, especially if you like fish.
