Elenna Gosso

Farm to table buffet restaurant in Odawara. Choose from more than fifty local dishes and our famous Kamaboko which is a traditional Japanese seafood products. Our chefs go to the local Odawara fish market and local farmers deliver their fresh seasonal vegetables. Our popular dishes are cooked with both Japanese and fusion recipes. We brew our popular Hakone beer in the same complex called Kamaboko Village, using the Hakone mountain spring water. You can choose an all-you-can-drink beer option for an extra charge. One minute’s walk away from Kazamatsuri station of Hakone Tozan line (Odakyu line), two stations away from both Odawara station and Hakone Yumoto station.

Elenagosso is a part of the interesting Kamaboko Village in Odawara. It is located between Odawara and Hakone so a convenient stop for anyone passing through. We stopped to try the kamaboko making experience and had a great time. While we waited for our finished products to cook we ate lunch here. The prices were reasonable and the selection was great. It gave us an opportunity to try different products and learn about the different tastes and flavors of the local food. And the BIG highlight was that Suzuhiro also brews the local craft beer next door! We had a wonderful local pilsner with our lunch and would like to have tried the others if we had more time.
The staff were very nice and communicated well. The food was excellent and atmosphere welcoming. Highly recommended for those on their was to or from Hakone. You will most likely pass it on your way from Odawara to Hakone anyway.

Unagitei Tomoei

Reviewed By Inex P - Perth, Australia

Tomoei Eel is a Michelin Star unagiya located in Hakone and they specialised in serving the freshwaster blue eel. In fact, when we went there, they only asked whether we wanted the unaju* (grilled eel with sweet soy sauce) or shirayaki (grilled eel seasoned with salt). I think most tourists went there just to eat the eel!
We didn't make any booking at all and went there on a whim. I listed this restaurant in my itinerary but it wasn't a must-visit place for us. After we hired our Nissan Cube, we had some free time to kill before our onsen session. Since we didn't book, we were told that there was a 40 minutes waiting time. We said yes and walked around the Hakone area for a bit.
The eel that Tomoei used is always prepared on the day when you order it. They use spring water from 100m underground to cook their food. The spring water that they used is of the same quality with the one that sake Breweries use called Miyamizu. Miyamizu is high in calcium and low in iron. The Yaizu's Freshwater eels are always kept in a 15.8 degree Celcius water.
I ordered the unaju which came with a bowl of kimosui (eel liver in clear soup) and otsukemono (pickled vegetables). The smell of the sweet soy sauce really filled the room when I opened my bento box. My unagi was so plump, tender and butterflied perfectly! This dish was so perfect with some sansho (Japanese pepper). My all-eel meal (una-zukushi) was very satisfying.
I think Hubby was a bit jealous of my dish but he was entertained with the mini crab on top of his plain shirayaki. The shirayaki was really interesting to eat especially with only light soy-dipping sauce and wasabi on the sides. We could taste the smoky and smoothness of the flesh but since both of us weren't eel purists, we definitely liked the unaju better.
The restaurant is really easy to find because it's located at Odawara entrance to Hakone area. If you're unsure, Google Maps will be able to guide you there. There are two car parks available for the customers. One is located right in front of the restaurant while the other one located right across the restaurant. There's a crossing bridge that you can use to walk from point A to B.
One thing to remember is that they don't have credit card facility at the restaurant. The facility was removed so they can keep the price down for their customers. There will be days that they run out of eels as well and unfortunately you can't call and make a booking. So it'll be better if you come earlier or just be there when they open the restaurant.
Tomoei Eel opens from 11 AM - 6 PM on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. They also open every Monday and Tuesday from 11 AM - 7 PM.
Explanation: * If unadon is eel over rice in a bowl then unaju is eel over rice in a box :-)

We arrived around 11 ish and decided to look for somewhere to eat before buying our passes and heading for Hakone-Yumoto. The Hakone Bakery looked inviting and more importantly had a few tables outside where we could sit with our luggage. We decided to have pizza and were pleasantly surprised. The crust was light and crunchy and it wasn't swamped with a thousand ingredients. The coffee was good and in a decent size cup. We had 2 pizzas and a coffee for ¥800 which was pretty good. They also have a choice of pastries if you prefer.

Our first Sushi in Japan and in this gorgeous place. It was quite crowded. The outside entrance looks more like entering a temple with its heavy wooden decoration yet as you enter it becomes very simple...a bit like a big canteen but all the tables were made of solid wood. The food was fresh and very tasty. I love sushi any day but not everything. In fact I much prefer Sashimi, without the rice which is quite filling. Here we had a good selection of both.
