Good initiative, but basic.
The center could go deeper in interpretating the Order of Avis, explaining their Mission, goals and actions throughout the centuries. It's a pity they fail to give a contribute to the debate around one of the most influential Orders of cristian influence that foster our current social organization.
There's room for progress...

You have to go to see these tapestries to quite appreciate how stunning they are. They are beautifully displayed (excellent curating). It is the sort of experience that makes you think to go back the next day.

Castelo da Rainha Santa Isabel

Reviewed By RodMcLeod - San Francisco, California

The main attraction here seems to be the castle area at the top of the town. It is well maintained, contains a nice pousada, and a number of other structures. You need to arrive, however, before the afternoon lunch/siesta period when everything but the pousada is closed tight. There is a very friendly café across from the church that was a former pottery workshop.

This fortress will give you a good impression about the importance of good build fortress to defend or attack a really wanted place. The fortress is rather empty regarding to armour and materials used in the history of this fortress. You will have a marvellous overview of the environment with Elvas and Babajoz in the area.

Falcoaria Alter-Real

EXPERIENCE FALCONRY AT ITS BEST! Alter-Real Falconry was founded in 1997. Offers recreational activities and environmental education with birds of prey, promoting the preservation and dissemination of historical and cultural heritage of falconry. Learn how to handle and fly a hawk whilst enjoying the scenic landscapes of Alentejo in close contact with nature and wildlife. A lifetime experience!

We had a little trouble finding this- it was hard to locate on our GPS. The grounds are expansive and include a large and interesting stable with the Alter-Real horses. The horses are magnificent and their history is very interesting. The experience with the falcons(and eagles and owls) was incredible and this is really not to be missed and worth every effort to locate. The handlers were very dedicated and the displays and educational materials, including a short film, were fascinating. You learn a lot about this ancient sport and the interaction with the birds themselves is unforgettable. They are splendid creatures and it is a privilege to be able to hold and stroke them.

Castelo de Monforte

Reviewed By dianinha m - Lisbon, Portugal
