We stumbled across O Castro during a three day break in the Alentejo region and whilst sight seeing in Portalegre.
Lunch consisted of the usual Portuguese couvert, delicious home made vegetable soup, the most tender and tasty lamb stew with rice and a side salad, a small caraffe of very drinkable house red, two small bottles of Pedras sparkling water and finished with two perfect Americanos with HOT milk as requested. All for a scarcely believable €23.80!!
Service was quick and friendly and the place was full of locals - always a good sign.
A similar meal on the Algarve would have been at least twice the price so for price combined with first class quality O Castro gets 5 stars.

Portuguese tradicional and contemporary cuisine. (I do have some images and there are images on the restaurant's site)
We arrived there on a rainy winter day and we felt like not even leaving the car and instead going somewhere else for lunch. The look from the outside was not that great. Fortunately, we decided to give it a try and as we approached the door we could tell it was a pretty decent option for our lunch.
Once inside, the décor is quite inviting and the gentleman who served us was very helpful. The food was delicious! I'd strongly recommend this restaurant. We had two appetizers, two mains and a dessert. All of them were great and included a lot of veggies as part of the recipes.
Most of the guests are Spanish and Portuguese families.
Go check it out!!!

While driving to Portalegre , called to another restaurant asking if they would serve us a meal after 22:00, immediately answered NO.
Then we called this one and immediately answered "what's your name sir?"
We arrived with low expectations and we had a great meal.
The food was very tasty and besides the meat dish we had a tuna very well cooked.
Small but a very good spot to come back.

This restaurant was rather hidden and modest looking at a distance. We asked at our hotel for a good restaurant with a reputation for its Portugese Food and were recommended this one. It certainly was a good choise. They had the menu in English but the headwaiter offered us the speciality of the day. We accepted and got a delicious dish made from meat of local black pig. It was tasty and perfectly prepared. A full 3 cource dinner was close to too much food because the portions were richer than expected. The bill however was leaner than expected. We liked the interior of the restaurant, rustic, neat and clean. The headwaiter and his staff gave us excellent service. We enjoyed the evening here and recommend it without hesitation.

The restaurant is closed for holidays and 1 November to 16 November.<br>Thank you.
Passing through Portalegre we couldn't have chosen a better place. The food was well cooked, simple Portuguese food. Chocos were the best we have tried, the steak was perfect and the chicken really tasty. Local artesian beer complemented the meal perfectly and the super friendly Alexander made the whole experience more than a pleasure. 100% recommended if you are in Portalegre.

We ate at this establishment a couple of years ago when passing through Portalegre and made a return visit last weekend.
If anything, the food was even better than 2 years ago.....the service was excellent, friendly, efficient & appropriately timed.
A very popular eating place for young families - doubtless because they offer generous portions at very reasonable price.
I thoroughly recommend the "Empada de Lebre" ....it's years since I ate hare & had forgotten just how delicious it can be.

My wife and I had Sunday lunch here - with a lot of other people just out for the (beautiful) afternoon. Large place with a nice atmosphere and attentive service. They specialise in grilled food, and the picanha was good enough - the soup was excellent. Perhaps a little above "normal" price but huge portions - the two of us didn't quite finish a single "dose", which our cats much appreciated when we took the leftovers home.

Restaurant specializing in Italian cuisine, pizzas, pastas and grills.
This is a small new restaurant at the historical center of the city, and it focuses on pizzas. I ordered a really original one: with cashew nuts, walnuts, raisins and pineapple. It was really good, all of the ingredients truly come together! For dessert I had a traditional cake called "boleima" with some walnut ice cream, which was also delicious! Also, the staff was great: always with a big smile and very helpful!

The reviews sounded good, the pictures looked good, so I made a reservation and my wife and I were looking forward to dinner out - sadly it was not to be. It's a tight, claustrophobic place and, when we arrived, there were a few occupied tables but the place was, by no means, full. We immediately received a basket of bread, some olives, cheese and roasted peppers. That, alas, was all we ever managed to get. After 20 minutes my wife grabbed the waiter on one of his passes by and confirmed that the writing on the board behind the bar was, in fact, the menu - it would have been nice to have been told this when we had entered. I asked for the wine list which, such as it was, arrived. After another 15 minutes I'd had enough - I grabbed the waiter's arm as he passed by - this seemed to be the only way to ever be noticed in the place and asked for the bill. Suddenly, there were 2 people wanting to take my order and I had to be quite insistent that it was, in fact, only the bill that I wanted. We paid the (quite reasonable) 3 euros 80 for what we'd had (the cheese we'd not touched and was not, thankfully, included on the bill) and left to go to one of any number of nearby places who understood better the concept of a restaurant being a place where people go to exchange money for food.

We went there for just something small and we ended up eating a full meal. Well presented and fresh food, just those little touches that makes a place stand out from the rest. The ladies kept asking if the food was alright and even though we didn't spend more than 25 euros, we got offered free shots at the bar. The restaurant is non smoking but the rest of the bar isn't, I can see how that might bother people though.
