Located about 25 miles from the mainland and accessible via air or ferry, Venezuela's mountainous Margarita Island provides Caribbean-style beaches and access to windsurfing, golf, horseback riding and scuba with a laid-back South American vibe. It's comprised of two islands connected in the middle by the mangrove-filled lagoon of La Restinga National Park. Most development falls on the isle's eastern side around busy Porlamar, the capital La Asunción and colonial Pampatar, founded in 1535.

Basilica Virgen del Valle is a gothic church located in El Valle del Espíritu Santo town in Margarita Island. The architecture of this sumptuous building is a gem :) This is a mandatory stop to all those catholics who are visiting Margarita. Outside the church, you can find plenty of stalls where locals are selling religious crafts! Its a safe place and there is plenty of security in the surrounding areas.

We visited Margarita Island while on a cruise, and La Restinga was the highlight of our whole trip. We took a speed boat through the mangroves. The boat was small, just three of us, and the boat driver. The boat driver stopped at various points to point out the oysters, or to catch water creatures in a jar for us to see. We saw startfish, jellyfish, and seahorse. In addition to these animals, we saw a wide variety of birds. A lovely trip! After the boat ride there were a few shops where one could purchase pearls and other local handicrafts. You could also purchase empenandas to eat.

Playa ubicada al Sur de la Isla de Margarita a 5 minutos del aeropuerto. Es una playa de aguas calientes, con uno de los mejores vientos para practicar windsurf y kitesurf durante todo el año.

Playa El Yaque is the beach in Margarita if you're with children (like me) or if you want to practice kite surf or windsurf. I'm from the island, but I currently live abroad and I must say "Playa El Yaque" is one of my favorites. There is a great environment, it has plenty of restaurants and small nice hotels to stay, it's just wonderful!

The museum is in not in good conditions, and does not have very much to see. Really a waste of time for an international traveller. Some of the outdoor Aquariums were dirty or didn't have all the species there to see.

Probably the least expensive beach in the world, with white sand, blue transparent Caribbean sea. Except for weekends beach not crowded and easily reached by taxi
or rented Car. Playa el Agua 15 minutes away another beautiful beach just cleaned up by local government, again with rock bottom prices .
But.........but...... Venezuela is at the moment a dangerous country to visit, you have to be very careful specially at night. Locals have adapted to the new situation so if you are adventurous (And a bargain hunter) willing to sacrifice late night outings you might just consider going to Margarita called " La Perla del Caribe".
Another important detail American citizens need a visa for Venezuela for the moment.

Took a cab here from Dunes hotel for about $4. We got a cab one way so we could choose when to leave. We were a bit nervous at first but it felt very safe here. We were dropped off at the waterfront. There was a nice park and many restaurants you could watch the sunset from. We were here a couple of days prior on the jeep tour by magic tours to watch the sunset. It was really beautiful. This was a good place to buy alcohol but the stores were mostly clothing and the same. Some vendors will trade money here at a good exchange. There is a small church downtown but I don't know if you could go in. On the other side of the fort there is a nice small well protected beach. Worth a visit if you are close.

Guacuco Beach is my favorite beach on Margarita. Since it is the closest to Porlamar and Pampatar. It is a mile long and although you can spend all day on it I prefer to arrive after 3 pm. It has all amenities and many restaurants. I'd rather go to North Beach because the city bus moves south and south many people come. The north is more tranquil. There are big waves and you can take Surfing lessons.
Services are not exelentes but they are enough to have fun.
