Puhinui Reserve

The small reserve has one major event a year, in December and then seems to sit quiet. We stopped in for a quick hike because our flight out of Auckland was delayed and we're pleased to get some fresh air in advance of being cooped up in a plane for a long flight.
For those who are airplane buffs, flights landing to the west pass very close.

Relaxing Journeys - Day Tours

You've made the decision to visit New Zealand for a once in a lifetime holiday - our aim is to make that a reality. Relaxing Journeys is New Zealand owned and operated, offering a broader range of New Zealand tours than anyone else in the country (over 500 NZ tours), and the tour operators we work with are the very best in their field.

Reviewed By Sona_G81 - Redwood City, California

This company is just a middleman for selling tours in NZ. I had booked Arthur's Pass Transalpine train journey through Relaxing Journeys which was then outsourced to Canterbury Trails tours. Unlike a lot of other tour operators neither Relaxing Journeys nor their operators offer alternatives for a crappy weather day - the only option was to bail out (and pay full fees) or go in rainy weather with no views, no hikes & feeling cold and wet the entire day of the tour.
The tour started with an operator Peter arriving at my hotel with wrong info. When I approached him, he waved me off saying that he was waiting for a couple instead. Turned out that the couple had bailed out due to weather but due to some miscommunication he thought that he had to wait for them & not me. We wasted 15-20 mins to sort this out. I don't understand why he didn't look through his portfolio of papers, he had my info nevertheless. So unprofessional!!
Next, he dropped me to the railway station. The train ride was super boring in rains with no views. I got off at Arthur's pass station & we drove in pouring rain to Devils' punchbowl to hike in wet weather for ~45 mins. It wasnt any fun. Next, we stopped for lunch & then had to skip couple of hikes (Castle Rock & Caves) due to inclement weather. During the drive back to Christchurch, the wind & rains were so bad that our vehicle shook multiple times on the road. It was totally unsafe & uncool.
I cannot fathom, why these operators do not allow to switch to another day or refund the fees. I had two other operators at Frank Josef & Lake Tekapo who, due to bad weather, provided me alternative tours & also an option to take a refund.
I do NOT recommend either Relaxing Journeys or Canterbury Trails. They dont want to cancel the tour so they dont lose money but dont care if you have a crappy day instead.

Ayrlies Garden

“If you think of gardening as an art form, Ayrlies is the best expression of that art”. Ayrlies is one of the select few New Zealand Gardens of International Significance. Bev McConnell presents a garden that is nearing maturity and is recognised for both design and horticultural excellence. The millennium year spurred a new project creating a wetland in the surrounding 10 acres which is now home to many native and visiting wildlife.

Floriade tours claimed this was the top garden in NZ, which prompted us to go when in Auckland. We spent a glorious autumn afternoon there. The orange, red and gold leaves on the trees, falling and leaving a golden carpet on the deep green grass - very memorable. There were different sections to the garden, with expanses of green grass, rock Bridges with golden vines, cascading Waterfalls down to lakes with jetties. The forest part was great, the lookout was good to rest in, the flowers and shrubbery beautiful. There were ducks in the lake, red berries, red trees, Bridges and statues. Hard to describe it, but if you like Gardens you will really like this one. Ring ahead and book in and on arrival pay a gardener. Parking is good at the site, and we needed GPS to find our way there and back. I almost forgot to tell you about the moss on the gates and fences - incredible when you come from a drought country. We would love to see the Gardens in the spring - so hope to do that in the future. Great photo opportunities. A real highlight of our NZ tour.

Jump is the best place to go when you need to blow some steam or calories. Its reasonably priced and a great way to get some physical activity in. It consists of large trampolines, a foam pit, basketball net and dodgeball court. Each session is an hour but its way more than enough to learn how to do a quick backflip into the foam pit

My son and I visited Formula E today. I have to say it was an excellent experience.
Hats off to the staff - extremely friendly staff and very professional and accomodating. They made us feel very welcome. They genuinely care about customers.
Karts - I have driven a lot of motorised karts but the today's experience with E was something very different. These karts are definitely very fast and the instant power really does push you hard against the seat.
Well done team - keep it up. We surely be back.
