At the north-east point of Dashu Township in Kaohsiung county, South Taiwan, Fo Guang Shan Monastery (literally translated as Buddha’s Light Mountain Monastery) sits on a bamboo hill on the left bank of the Gaoping river. Here you will find the headquarters of a prominent Buddhist order, established by Master Hsing Yun and his disciples. The architecture of the buildings within the monastery complex is characteristic of the traditional Buddhist monastery, but one may be pleasantly surprised with the array of visitor-friendly amenities on offer. The southeastern face of Fo Guang Shan Monastery features the prominent Great Buddha Land, which is home to a standing Buddha image of 48 metres in height, and 480 smaller Buddha images that surround it. English-speaking visitors may find information and maps in English at the Reception, and prior contact via email can be made to discuss free tour options.
We decided to visit while staying in Kaohsiung, looked at several options to get there and in the end went to Zuoying MRT station, as you exit the station in front will be the escalator to the HSR, turn left and platform 2 will be...Morehank you for the feedback. The Monastery offers the opportunity to experience the many aspects of Buddhism, and is a good place to wind down and revitalise one's mind. It is advisable to set aside an entire day to see it all.

The Buddha Museum (formerly Buddha Memorial Center) was constructed with the intention of the construction commenced in 2001 enshrining the Buddha's relic and lasted for ten years. It was officially opened on the 25th December 2011.
We spend the day at this museum after spending the night in the pilgrims lodge. We learned so much about Budhism here and could not recommend this place highly enough. Do plan for at least 1 day here as there is a lot of ground...MoreThank you for your feedback, and welcome you to visit the Buddha Museum frequently! Its a nice modern public library building that really helps those students and other researchers in gathering information for their, studies and research activities. Its always full of people either doing their studies at site or borrowing books to take home for their assignment, their books accounting system was so organize that borrowed books can be return by postal system.

It is a fair walk from the nearest bus stop to the museum. Even though I went in late October and on a cloudy day, the vastly concreted entrance without much shade still reflected a lot of heat. The exterior of the building looked a bit bland. Lawns were not very well kept. Staff at information desk were very helpful. We did not have time for the permanent collection but followed the guided tour to see a large exhibition of Anli, a famous indigenous artist from Taiwan. The collection was brilliant and depicted interesting tribal culture. The lady guide was very patient in taking us through and answering all our questions. The museum is situated in the newly established affluent part of Kaohsiung surrounded by modern luxury apartment blocks. At night when the air cools down, people go to the lit up area around the museum for a leisure walk or evening exercises.

Once was to visit the famed Suzuka Circuit and another was to shop while waiting for my flight out of Kaohsiung (this station is 1 station from the airport). This is a fairly typical science museum with fairly interesting exhibits. It is quite large, about 5-6 levels with exhibits cateorised by topics.
But the few exhibits that my kids were interested in were all under maintenance, e.g. earthquake similator, flight simulator etc.
There is an IMAX cinema attached, but we did not try it out.
While we were there, there were lots of local young students presumably on a school excursion trip.

Used the ferry to go across, after a short walk from the MRT. Hired a couple of good electric bikes from Pinkys and headed off. The fort and lighthouse were interesting. Afterwards we headed back around the boardwalk to check out the views across the channel and then through the tunnel to the beach. Nice ride along here with a couple of nice stops. It was a enjoyable day out.

I liked the tower albeit it a little busy with tourists. Had a very nice run around, it's about 3km in total. Nice place to workout just beside it too. Towers themselves offer good views of you climb up. Lots of places to eat and drink nearby.
Worth a visit for sure!

A long old climb, but worth every second! There were monkeys jumping around, trying to steal things and posing for photos and the views going up were incredible. This is a definite must for visitors to Kaohsiung (so long as you are not afraid of monkeys ofc)
Also it doesn't cost a thing..

On 7th floor, dinner in a nice Korean restaurant with family had delicious dishes. Under ground, high level parking lot provides many space for parking. It’s a well-known landmark in Kaohsiung and a good place for shopping, dieting, entertainment or just fun. You can take MRT, metro to reach this place or just a main stop during your city tour in Kaohsiung city.
