The glowing Mosquito Bay is a vision of bizarre beauty. Thanks to a bioluminescent microorganism, the water is a cool electric blue, looking somewhat like a fantastical sci-fi lagoon. Kayak or hop into a clear-bottomed pontoon boat to glide along the neon waters. Swimmers and snorkelers will adore the pristine, undeveloped beaches. Keep an eye out for the playful feral horses that gallop along the dunes, or visit the stately ceiba tree that’s been keeping watch over the highland for three centuries.

Vieques National Wildlife Refuge and all visitor facilities is closed due to impacts from Hurricane Irma. Refuge closures include all hiking trails, boat ramps, fishing access, and other recreational use on refuge lands. The closure remains in effect until the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assesses storm damage and has determined it is safe for visitor access.
It's a long beach, probably one of the longest on the island, with many different places to swim at. It's definitely not the place to go bodysurfing, if that's what you're looking for. There's supposedly a reef on the right side of the island of the coast.
Overall, this is a float in the water kind of beach, it's shallow for a long time, but the waves will pick you up and down, not a place to learn to swim.

Well... It's not what it used to be. Most palm trees in the pictures are gone. Also many of the Cabanas have been destroyed. How beautiful it must have been 6 months ago. Because still it is a very beautiful place to have been. It's all cleaned up and only a 15 minute cab ride away from the ferry landing. White beach. Very few people around. Easy for the kids near the edges and bigger waves in the center. Park closes at 4 pm so get there early to enjoy it all.

We visited on a new moon night recently, after having been last year on a night with a moon. While the glow is not yet a real "glow" (steady, blueish light) that blew us away last visit, you could see plenty of sparkles when paddling, looking at the clear bottom of the kayak, and especially splashing with your hand. The stars were gorgeous, you could see the Milky Way. Given the colder conditions and new growth happening after Maria, I expect this will be getting better and better as the months go on. Still absolutely worth a visit now - especially if you've never seen a bio bay before, this is still magical!

If paradise had palm trees...they'd call it Sun Bay.

This rather remote beach is scenic and breathtaking with a mildly rugged coastline and perfect waters for swimming and snorkeling.
Definitely one of my favorite two Beaches on the island. Water is crystal clear and aqua blue. Stingrays swam around my feet. A few places for shade, but better to bring an umbrella.

The rough surf of Navio Beach attracts surfers and a younger, more hip crowd.
Definitely one of my favorite two Beaches on the island. Water is crystal clear and aqua blue. Unlike othe Beaches Navio has waves (small waves). A few places for shade, but better to bring an umbrella. It is a small beach blocked in by rocks at cliffs at either end. This is quiet and secluded. Get to it by driving into Sun Bay Beach entrance.

Beautiful area to stroll along and check out the local restaurants and people. Relaxed area with something for everyone.

Vieques was such a nice, quiet getaway. I went with my boyfriend - we flew to San Juan and took a tiny little plan over to Vieques and it blew away my expectations. We rented a Jeep and explored these beautiful little Beaches where we were basically alone in paradise. There were wild horses that roamed along the road to the beach, which was really cool.
We stayed in a little hotel on the other side of the island from the big resort and they provided breakfast and coffee in the morning, which included fresh mangoes that were picked right off the tree in front of us! The restaurants along the main street were incredible and the water was so clear and blue. It was like a dream.
We also did a kayak tour through the bio luminescent bay and I'm not going to lie - we paid for the tour, which met in an abandon parking lot, and they picked us up in an old schoolbus and I thought for sure we were about to be taken somewhere to be murdered or robbed - not the case though - and the bio luminescence was one of my absolute favorite experiences from vacation. It looked like magic.

My husband and I went snorkeling at Mosquito Pier and loved it! I wish we would have rented flippers so we would have felt more confident to adventure more towards the pier dock. We seen sea turtles while we were walking on the pier. We swam right over an octopus though while we were snorkeling along the side of the little road you take down to the pier.

This appropriately-named beach, curving like a half moon, is shallow enough to walk out 40 feet.
It's a really nice and a little isolated beach. It's not as big and you might be the only person there if it happens. The water is clean and doesn't go deep very quickly so it's suitable for children.
The beach has no shops or kiosks so you have to bring water and other beach supplies with you.
