Hawes is a small market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England, that was granted its market charter in 1699. Historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire, Hawes is located at the head of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales; the River Ure runs to the north of the town and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The parish of Hawes also includes the neighbouring hamlet of Gayle. It is 31.2 miles (50.2 km) west of the county town of Northallerton. The Wensleydale Creamery is a major producer of Wensleydale cheese.

An interesting little one hour coach stop. The shop is full of lovely things, bags, scarves, mugs, key rings all sorts of souvenirs at extremely high prices. The cheese shop has a vast array of free cheeses to taste and all priced very reasonably, plus the cheese tastes a lot better than the stuff you buy in the supermarkets. The coffee shop is large and airy with great tea, coffee, cakes and snacks at pretty low prices.I think an hour is all you need here, but worth a toilet and afternoon tea break

We were looking forward to seeing the rope works. My husband is a keen rope worker and knot man. Whilst interesting we found the visit cold and unfriendly. Non of the staff wanted to talk to us about their work, or indeed about our interest. After saying that it was good to browse the bargain bins and were able to buy some ends of rope and some comes from the big rolls. These cones are very helpful when craft making and I was delighted to find them. Good visit and interesting if you didn't know about rope or wanted to buy a dog lead. Staff could do with a laughter class to increase their job satisfaction.

Hope the sun shines the next time you're in the area, but if not, there are lots of indoor attractions to visit in the Dales.

We visited at a time when it was snowing/raining so the falls may have been in full flow. The falls themselves appear as you turn a corner following the short walk from the car park. They are centre stage in their own natural theatre and are awe inspiring.

From a beginner who has never taken the camera off automatic, to an experienced photographer with the latest DSLR, the Yorkshire Dales Photography School can help take your photography further. Landscapes and Waterfalls is one of our popular sessions, but we offer introductory, intermediate and advanced general photography courses, as well as specialised courses in any area of photography.
Mike from YDPS embraces the photographic philosophy that "a good photographer should ideally be able to convert an image seen firstly in the mind into a photograph".
When I was searching from Australia for a professional photographer for my wife and I to share a day with in the Dales, it was Mike's approach to photography that caught my eye first. This is what we needed to learn better photography composition.
I'm a reasonably experienced photographer, but my photographic compositional skills need work and I needed to look outside my box. Over the course of the day we spent with Mike, both my wife and I gained insight into much better compositional styles.
More than 9 hours of personal instruction covering several of the Dales highlites gave us ample opportunity to work and review in real time. During this time I pulled out my 70-200 more times than I'd ever done before when shooting landscapes. The reason was excluding unnecessary details and highliting just what needed to be portrayed to the viewer. That's not to say the wide angle lens was left in the bag, NO is wasn't, but it wasn't used exclusively.
Mike is personable, knowledgeable and understands where to provide support and where allow freedom of choice.
I would happily spend more time with Mike to gain greater insight into the art of photography.

Worth a visit if visiting nearby Hardraw Force or Hawes. Park at the layby with the wooden fence where the road bends left if coming from Hardraw or Hawes. Then it is a short, level walk past a field to the stepped waterfall. Has an information board, and free to visit. Nice to see the lambs in the field too!

Artist Stacey Moore opened her first gallery in 2016, in her hometown of Hawes, North Yorkshire. The small gallery showcases Stacey’s impressive animal coloured pencil drawings, influence by the Yorkshire Dales. The gallery is a unique and welcoming place, which you can often watch Stacey drawing on site. There is a large range of limited edition prints, one off originals, stationery and gifts.
We visited this lovely small gallery on a visit to Hawes. Loved Stacey's work and bought a nice fox print (love the character she captures).
Once we got home, we realised we should have bought the field mouse print too, so used the easy online shop and now we have the two.
Take a look if you're in the area and love british animals and/or art.
