Top 10 Things to do in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands

February 20, 2018 Diedre Savory

The largest city in the U.S. Virgin Islands is a popular shopping center, home to 20,000 people, upscale shops, ecotours and underwater safaris. This former haunt of pirate ships now hosts millions of cruise passengers every year. Look beyond the boutiques and discover historic sights such as the bright red, 17th-century Fort Christian, the graceful green Legislature Building, the 1793 brick Lutheran Church and the taxing 99 steps stairway. Charlotte Amalie is easy to explore on foot.

Magens Bay is just simply awesome. If you take a transportation run from the port, up to the Daiquiri lookout you will get a birds eye view of the beach. You are then about a 20 minute ride down to the wonderful sands of Magen’s Bay. There is a bar/restaurant and boutique on site. Chairs available for rent and the waters are wonderful.

Thankfully visitors will be able to enjoy the expansive view from Paradise Point across from the cruise ship dock in Havensite St. Thomas. You can see for miles across the ocean all the way to the Islands of Culebra and Vieques which are just outside of Puerto Rico (which you can almost see on a good day).
The owner has done a stupendous job in cleaning away the landslide that impeeded the renovation, has cleaned and painted the restaurant and shopping area. I was able to drive up with a friend the other day to be still amazed by the view after 28 years of living on the island.
Coconut island telegraph rumors that shops will open in March. In years past Paradise Point was open late on select nights - it's a real treat to watch the sunset and catch a glimpse of the "green flash" - the moment the sun sets on the horizon in the Caribbean is truly a sight to behold.
So be patient and if you're coming before Valentines day unfortunately you will miss out on this island treasure - all the more reason to come back in the future when our recovery from the devastating hurricanes progresses.

My husband and I just completed our Advanced Open Water certification check out dives with St. Thomas Diving Club. Other than some scheduling mix ups in the beginning, we were generally pleased with the experience. The dive instructors were very knowledgeable about the area and Thaddeus in particular seemed interested in assuring we had mastered the necessary skills. The night dive was especially interesting and the WIT Con wreck was also good. I can highly recommend St. Thomas Diving Club and their dive masters.

A well known early colonial Synagogue in Dutch style. Both a museum and an active Synagogue according to the reform movement rites. The sand covered floor came as quite a surprise!
The Synagogue is within easy walking distance of the cruise terminal although could be challenging on a hot day as up a steep hill. Our ship was visible from the foyer.

This is primarily a collection of epiphytes, and the are a lot of beautiful orchids and other plants in a lush tropical forest atmosphere. However, there are a few dead ends on the pathway with" under construction " signs. Right now I would say an hour is enough to take it in. There are some places to stop and sit, and is it would be a pleasant place to just sit and enjoy the plants and peaceful surroundings. I think that there is a lot of potential, but work is needed to maximize that potential.

Bluebeard's Beach (formerly Limetree Beach), at Wyndham's Bluebeard's Beach Club, is under appreciated. It's a beautiful beach, with a great view, and rarely crowded. If you're not a guest of Wyndham, you'll have to park in the public lot, but that is not a big deal. Also, the Lanai restaurant is now open, so you can get a good meal or a relaxing drink. And there's the swim-up bar in the pool.

A good attraction in the caribbean, with sculptures on ice, the cold is intense 25 degrees F. From where we left the taxi to the attraction was quite far, but it was very good to walk back down the streets of St. Thomas and see the Shops When we arrived, we had bought the excursion on the cruise, we had no problems, they gave us the gloves and the coat, inside the attraction you see in about 20 minutes, they give you a free drink, the glass of the drink is in ice too. It's very good, the drink is rum cruzano. She is very good and funny. You can visit the attraction with people with disabilities.
