Top 10 Things to do in Borobudur, Indonesia

January 2, 2018 Almeta Stockton

Although Indonesia is largely Muslim and Bali a Hindu enclave, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Borobudur -- actually located on the neighboring island of Java – is one of the most fascinating Buddhist stupas and temple complexes in the world. Organized tours via air can be booked with Balinese tour operators.

We are really impressed by Tomo and Nanang's efficiency and professionalism. Their service quality is way above expectation: fast communication, flexibility, understanding with reasonable price. They customized our trip. We were lead to change/cancel our itinerary at the very last minute due to heavy rain, it was no hassle at all. Our driver Andri accompanied us during all our stay, he is friendly, smiling, patient and efficient.
We are highly recommending Javanava Travel cafe and will surely ask them to help next time we come to Java.

This temple is part of the Borobudur Temple Complex which also includes Borobudur and Pawon Temples. This small 9th century Buddhist temple has some beautiful relief carvings on the outside and a large Buddha statue inside. It is not crowded and can be seen in 15 minutes. The best thing near the temple is the very old and beautiful Banyon tree. You can also walk to the Mandut Buddist monastery near buy where you will be surrounded by aggressive street sellers.

Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple Compounds This famous Buddhist temple, dating from the 8th and 9th centuries, is located in central Java. It was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 m2. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with UNESCO's help in the 1970s.

after a few days I explore the central of Java I arrived here, this trip I accidentally stopped at the complex of enshrinement of Borobudur and arjuna temple, although the weather is rather hot I remain enthusiastic, the building is very impressive, made long before the technological sophistication but seen from the shape and structure making it very sophisticated in this day, it amazes me, I really appreciate the government that still guard one of the cultural heritage and one of the wonders of this world.

Borobudur Tours & Travel

Reviewed By Tony D - Yomitan-son, Japan

We were very pleased with every aspect of using Borobudur Tours & Travel! Wiedy was always quick to respond to questions, itinerary changes (by us), and arranging tours on other Islands besides central Java (he arranged our wonderful time in Bali as well as our visit to Borobudur and Prambanan Temples). We had already booked our Komodo Island trip before contacting- had we not already put a down payment down, we would have used Borobudur Tours & Travel for that portion of our Indonesia trip as well.
Our driver Sigit (hope I spelled it correctly) was perfect- very accommodating, stopped when requested for photos or bathroom breaks in addition to providing interesting facts and Indonesian history. His English was very good - rarely asking to repeat anything.
He was waiting for us as we walked out the airport doors and was early for any pickups.
Thank you Wiedy & Sigit for such a memorable trip!

I came to Punthuk Setumbu around 3 am and they already full with many people who are waiting to watch sunrise. You can see the sunrise with the Borobudur temple as background as well. It's cheaper to watch the sunrise in Punthuk Setumbu than in Candi Borobudur.
The trail is quite hard, because we need to go with many stairs as well.

This was a beautiful half day trip from our villa in Borobudur. The journey is lovely through the villages and the walk itself easy yet very beautiful in the middle of the rice paddies. The temple itself nothing spectacular after seeing Borobudur, however just for the walk it was worthwhile the trip.

Javalestari Tours were my guides for a week. As a middle aged English speaking woman travelling alone, they were trustworthy, polite and accommodating. I felt very safe with the guides and drivers. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They took me to all the temples I wanted to see and also suggested places I hadn't thought of. Highly recommended.

Chicken Church

Reviewed By Yuki4by - Beijing, China

That was the most fun ever. I wasn't really planning to go on a cycling tour, but I was already in Borobudur for sunrise, and Wiedy Antara suggested I try a cycling tour. It wasn't expensive, I think the price depends on whether you go solo with a guide or are a part of a group. As I was the only one during that day, I ended up paying 200K for it, which didn't seem a lot at all, considering all the fun we had.
I felt like a total VIP having the guide for myself only. And the tour was Superb. I want to mention that I am not that good of a cyclist, I am quite clumsy and out of practice, but it didn't matter at all. The guide was very very attentive, and he adjusted the difficulty of their according to my abilities. I am sure that if you are more confident on a bike, then the route would be changed just for you. And so is the time of the tour. There is a maximum duration, but if you feel like you had enough, then you can come back any time.
The great thing is that it's not just cycling, but the guide tells you a lot of interesting stuff about local life and businesses and crafts, he will show you what the locals grow in the fields, how the live, what they do. You'll see how they prepare corn and rice, you'd be able to visit real houses. The guide will take you to a place where they make tofu, and another place where they make tapioca chips, and a small pottery village where you'd be able to have a go at the real pottery wheel and try to make something not too hopelessly ugly and resembling a vase. All that is a part of the tour, and it's super-interesting. You feel immersed in the local culture and you can see the real way of life.
Chicken Church wasn't really a part of their cycling tour, but as I really wanted to see it, they said it could be arranged. I was supposed to bike there, but the tour said it might be too difficult for me to do, and eventually another guide gave us a ride in a car.
I read about chicken church before and I thought it would be sort of abandoned and dark and scary, with a heavy atmosphere, but it was the opposite of that. It felt just as it was intended - a place of love and acceptance. It was full of light and i felt like dancing and smiling. You can go downstairs and there are a lot of praying rooms where you can stay by yourself if you feel like it, they all have doors and you'll have some privace. Or you can sit in the main hall and bask in a wonderful music and rays of Sunshine. You can go up to the chicken head and enjoy the view, while marveling at the fantasy of a person who decided to make that funny pigeon (yes, it's a pigeon, not a chicken at all!!). Before you leave, go up to the "tail" part, there is a little sort of a cafe there, or more like a food stall, and a little Terrace with tables and chairs. If you show your ticket, you'll get a portion of the yummiest deep-fried tapioca with chili sauce. It tastes so-so good.
After that the guide drove me back to Yogyakarta. I really looooved that day, the tour, the funny church, and I wanted to send warm thanks to Wiedy Antara tour for organizing all that. I really enjoyed. Still excited thinking about it.

Suroloyo is not that famous but definitely a highlight in the Borobudur area. Already the drive to Suroloyo is a dive into the local scenery: we saw pigeon racing, local fishermen competitions with an incredible number of participants. The highlights, of course, are the breathtaking rice terraces at and around Suroloyo Peak..... just have a look, breath and enjoy!
