This landmark church building is now in use as a huge exposition center for art work. The church is even part of the Dutch 'museum card' (museumkaart; costs about 60 euro's for a year) with which you can visit museums in almost every town of Holland.

The Netherlands are blessed with endless wide sandy Beaches and lots of villages-on-the-beach. Bergen-aan-Zee is one of the friendliest, unassuming but lovely parts. Because the beach is so wide and stretches literally along the coast from north to south, you can always find some space and it never gets to crowded. Shallow waters, watched over by lifeguards. Great day out, couple of lovely restaurants and coffee places nearby.

Egmond has a nice wide beach to walk. However, the dunes are not very high here. You can see the roofs of homes and hotels over the dunes. Quite different in that respect from Zandvoort or Ijmuiden. The place has a typical touristy feel to it, but it is enjoyable. Several nice beach cafe's on the beach, which were open although it was the middle of the winter. All in all, an enjoyable beach to visit.

Dispatching goods by auction was done here. Inside the inner sections of the covered complex were the piers or landing platforms. Herein goods were received for auction. The means of transport was through the water and the products were auctioned in bulk.
An interesting way to facilitate marketing of products. I guess there was a certain control of the prices of specific products. it might depend on a season when crops can be harvested.

The ruins of this church are a prominent feature of this up market north Dutch town. The area surrounded by little boutique shops and nice, attractive places to eat and drink. The manicured lawns around the ruined walls are a testament to the general good order of everything in this lovely little town.

Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, which opened in 1875, is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. The museum manages the Alkmaar City Council collection, with more than 12,000 objects. The collection of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century paintings is outstanding, with masterpieces of national significance. The museum is also known for its large collection of Bergen School works. Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is the city of Alkmaar’s memory and the starting point for anyone who wants to experience and discover the history and art of Alkmaar and the surrounding area. This is presented in a topical and personal way in changing and interactive Exhibitions for young and old.
I was expecting a bit of a bore of a museum, sort of a red headed stepchild housing the back of the closet items of of the parent museum in Amsterdam. I cheerfully admit, I was totally and unexpectedly wrong. The “Victorie” exhibition of the...MoreThank you so much for your review. We are glad you enjoyed our museum. It is very good to read what we can improve, for example the route inside the museum. Best regards, Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar

A steep sand dune leading to a very large woodland with plenty of paths and cycle routes. A lovely area to walk. If the hill is too much for you to manage there is a path to the right behind an hotel that is more manageable. There are bars and cafes at the base of the hill for refreshments.
