My wife and I traveled to Alkmaar and had dinner in a lovely Scottish restaurant with a huge selection of whisky. We both decided to have the "surprise" three course meal with whisky accompaniment. What a great choice! We started with a terrine and a whisky made for the twenty fifth anniversary of The Hielander and it was the best of the three. For our main course we had beef from a highlander cow and Haggis. The beef was delicious and so was the Haggis. They make their own Haggis at the restaurant and it was great! The dessert was a mixture of berries, oatmeal and cream. What an incredible meal and I believe it was the owners, husband and wife, that served us and they were awesome. He explained each whisky and the meals perfectly and enhanced our visit. The ambience was lovely. They really created a lovely Scottish pub in North Holland. If you find yourselves in Alkmaar, like we did, you will have a spectacular meal and a wonderful time at The Hielander.

I can advise this place for its warm ambiance. The food was disappointing for being the number 1 place in Alkmaar. They certainly pay a lot of attention to the visual aspect of the dishes, but the taste combinations are somewhat questionable. Nice wine houses Luigi Bosca, Newton Johnson, ... on the wine list, but the lower quality ranges. The waiter beliefs to give a professional explanation. I expected more...

It's easy. You walk up to the counter and you order fries. You can order from a selection of toppings, such as mayonaise (hey, it's Dutch!) and you get what you need: perfectly cooked, golden brown fries, the way they should be.
This is by far the best place in the area to get the fries. No Seating, no fancy restaurant, just a paper bag with fries in them. What more could you want?

I come here often and i really would recommend this place like i always do with my friends. The price is above average but you can choose a 3/4 of 5 course meal for a nice price. The food is always fresh and unique served and presented in a nice and fine way. You can taste and find real Italian food here and If you like you can talk Italian here, the family who runs this place is Italian.

This is not a restaurant but the house of Mamma. No menù-card No cappuccino No Tea No American coffee
If a good restaurant is measured by the passion and enthusiasm of the person cooking, then look no further than Mamma Peppino.Thank you for an unforgetable Christmas in your Italian restaurant. Our Italian friends are already jealous. I dream of your tortellini! What a beautiful partnership...a fabulous cook and a vivacious wife to serve the food.

We love this charming restaurant. Chef Ton's cooking is uncomplicated and classic, his dishes are well and intensively tasting, with a perfect cuisson and nicely presented. No endless row of hitech amuses, but just good bread and butter on the table. No extensive menu but enough altenative dishes to please everybody. All based on the season of the year and on what the market offers. Kind and decent service, and always interesting wines to accompany the meal. This time Erik had found a Swiss wine, from the borders of the Bieler See. Absolutely special, because the Swiss are not particularly known as big wine exporters. They seem to drink it all themselves, which we fully understand in this case. It was a Pinot Noir, with perfect tones of fresh red fruit, delicate and smooth.

I was recommended Abby's as one of the better restaurants in Alkmaar, but struggle to find a reason to return as there is nothing special about this place (which sadly can be said for many Alkmaar restaurants).
The interior looks a boring 1980s style, and the menu offers plain pasta, meat and fish dishes of the not very imaginative kind....if you can read it, because only available in Dutch.
The Ossobucco I had was good but the Ravioli average at best. Staff was friendly.
The bill came to about 60 Euro per person (without wine), for which you get a great dinner in any larger city in Europe, so for here (meaning at Abby's and in Alkmaar) the value is poor.
