Horrendous zoo. Conservation not touched upon at all. This zoo is all about entertainment. The animals are kept in tiny, bare enclosures with no stimulation. Really wish we had read some articles about it before going along. DO NOT GO TO THIS ZOO IF YOU HAVE ANY NOTION OF ANIMAL WELFARE AT ALL.

We had a nice visit to Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre on our way home from the Lake District. We took our dog for a walk along the woodland trail, which has plenty of benches where you can sit and think under the tree canopy, but it’s worth noting that there are no bins around. The temple is beautiful and very different to anything else you’ll see nearby - or further afield for that matter. We didn’t sample any of the classes on offer here, but there are plenty of options, including free meditation sessions. We finished with lunch in the cafe; dogs are allowed in the lounge so we ate there. The room was spotless, with people cleaning and polishing every nook and cranny. The hummus and cucumber Sandwich was very nice, coming on chunky bread, with potato salad, crisps and carrot strips. Afterwards, I ordered a slice of apple cake and it was one of the nicest cakes I’ve had in some time. The same couldn’t be said of my partner’s chocolate and caramel slice; it was nothing like what we expected, and I don’t even know how to describe it, but maybe it’s an acquired taste. The whole meal was very inexpensive, and the walk around the grounds was free (unlike Muncaster Castle), making it excellent value. After a quick browse in the shop, we headed off having had an enjoyable, unique experience. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed my visit here today. The lady who chatted to my friend and I in the visitor centre was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. We will be back next year on a brighter day to see the sunset and the shadows these impressive ruins will create. Really fascinating place to visit - we spent 3 hours there but would spend longer in warmer weather. Wear sensible footwear in wet weather, we had walking boots on and were so glad we did. The accessibility of the site is really good and I imagine families would love letting kids run on the grass and in and out of the arches and hiding places. Well recommended!

Family Pub with live music every Saturday night. Snug area with real log burning fire. Quiz Nights. Food coming soon.

Stumbled on this pub and what a find. New owners Lorraine and Mike where really friendly and knowledgable about the area. The pub has really low priced drinks and great offers and to top it all a real log burning fire. There is a rear beer garden which I didn't use due to the weather and there was entertainment advertised for the weekend A Great traditional Lake District pub and great value. Lorraine tells me she will also be serving food in the new year hopefully as traditional as the pub itself
Five stars all round

Barrow Park

The Gardens of Barrow park are superb, and a credit to the horticultural staff.
The park is a lovely place to stroll through during the day (although, as in every park, evidence of night time anti-social behaviour was to be occasionally glimpsed) - plus it has a delightful lake with much bird life, and a miniature steam railway, which runs most weekends.
Only downside for young families, is that sadly, the Town Council has now seen fit to deprive its residents of the rowing and paddle boats that used to be available for hire on the lake - which certainly brightened my childhood in years past.
