Mayen is a town in the Mayen-Koblenz District of the Rhineland-Palatinate Federal State of Germany, in the eastern part of the Volcanic Eifel Region. As well as the main town, additional settlements include Alzheim, Kürrenberg, Hausen-Betzing, Hausen and Nitztal. Mayen is the administrative centre of the Vordereifel ‘Collective Municipality’, although it is not part of the municipality.

Combining high quality Italian cuisine with a Portuguese note, excellent service and a cosy, family-friendly atmosphere, Caravella stands out as one of the best pizzerias in this part of Germany. Its location in Mayen, a picturesque medieval small town in the scenic Eifel Mountains, makes it the perfect getaway from the huzzle and buzzle of nearby Rhineland cities such as Cologne, Bonn and Duesseldorf.

We have not been back here for some time due to our travels so having dinner here this past weekend was something we looked forward to. The familiar faces of Mrs. Wagner along with her service team gave us a warm welcome. The restaurant recently underwent a bit of a renovation and the previously ornate styled dining room now has a more modern flair with updated window dressings and muted walls. But the food and service has not changed.
We enjoyed some all of our familiar dishes including the lovely foie gras variation which had ice cream, parfait and cooked version on the plate. All were lovely although I thought the green apple jelly parfait was a little tart for my palate. The beef carpaccio was also very well composed with a lovely potato rosi and sour cream sauce over tasty beef slices. Our mains were the signature lobster with truffle noodles and beans – a most ridiculously good composition which makes you want to unceremoniously lick the plate when you have finished sucking every last bit of sauce from the lobster shell. We also had the turbot with kohlrabi noodles and truffles which was surprisingly good combination with the dark veal sauce.
We never made it further to desserts as we were exhausted after a long day of traveling and a lovely but filling meal with several glasses of wine. There is not much more to be said about Gourmet Wagner – the service is excellent, the food is very well composed and delicious and the atmosphere is welcoming and warm. There are only about 25 seats in the dining room so there was loud din to interrupt our conversations. Other diners were couples both older as well as 30ish, and some small groups– this is a change from the years we had previously been coming when the couples were predominantly older. But it seems the foodie focus has started to entrench itself and younger generations are re-discovering good food in the region. Funnily, all the men dining that evening [including my Darling husband] sported some version of a grey dress shirt and dark pants - perhaps the standard uniform these days for a moderately dressy dinner. We love this restaurant and look forward to our next visit!

The "Meyer's Imbiss" (i.e. Meyer's Snackbar) is located directly at one of the main roads out of Mayen. They are serving traditional fast food. The Currywurst and the fries are good and the staff is friendly and helpful.
Eating only outdoors (not so nice in bad weather) as well as take away. Good value for the price.

Only 200m from the Bürresheim Castle a nice restaurant, we sat for lunchin the winter garden Terrace. I had delicious scallops wrapped in a bacon jacket over potato salad with pine nuts and salad. Good food, good location in a nice setting. Do not miss this restaurant if you visit the Castle!

Our final evening in Mayen and we decided that we should try something different. A bit slow with service but very tasty souvlaki and salad. Overall, a busy restaurant, popular with locals, good food and at reasonable price prices.

Together with the team we decided to go for a quick lunch. We ordered in advance by phone and the service was simply great. After a quick welcome drink, the food was served fast and was very tasteful. The interior of the restaurant is already worth a visit as the owner spend a lof time to create a Greek atmosphere. Prices are reasonable.

It is hard to believe that you can have a proper tasty all you can eat Asian restaurant for just €8,- (ex drinks). The building is a former train station, has a factory style look and feel, but has been designed with some subtle details. Personally I like the lights in the building. You have a massive choice of food with soup, sushi, hot dishes and desert. The quality is really good and I enjoyed the lunch. The staff is fast and kind so definely something to consider when you are in Mayen.
