We took the Little Red Train through the Bernina Pass and were rewarded with stunning views. We didn't get off at any of the stops along the way, but seeing that you could, and hike around a bit before hopping back on another train, we will have to plan to go back and do that next time. A UNESCO world heritage site that doesn't disappoint with tunnels, Bridges, glaciers, and blue, blue lakes. Trains will sometimes have yellow observation cars at the back which are open air. You will have to brace the cold air, wind and the loud screeching of the wheels on the track, but you will get to enjoy unencumbered views and be able to take much better photos. Worth the trip!

This lake is at the foothills of Poschiavo ending at the small but lovely town Le Prese. It is like a dream. It has several locations that can be nice areas for picnic but its scenery is its best asset. I saw it from many locations, but may be its best view is from the high ground above Poschiavo. This can be viewed from the Bernina Express train.

From the Cavaglia railway station of the Bernina railway walk ahead to the little road with the advertisements and turn left there. About 500 meters from the railway station there is the entrance to the giant pots. The path is signed. It is more or less flat except the first and the last part of the path guiding you through the garden.
The glacier of the prehistoric times formed giant holes, the giant pots. There are at least 20 of them you can visit. And it is absolutely safe.
Nobody should miss this natural phenomenon.

The reason I came to this region was this little lake as I have seen photos of it and wanted to see it by myself.
First, you cannot access it via car, you need to at least walk about 20 min (mainly upwards) if you used the bus or 2-2.5h if you started below.
When you walk there you have to cross a path where cows are, they were harmless but as there were 50 and more of them pretty close to you with no fense at all this can be a little frightening.
The lake itself is beautiful, nice colors and very very clear water. You can see old rotten trees in the lake as there was no water. Especially with the Mountains in the back this lake is awesome. I need to go there again in autumn when the leaves start to fall and turn in to more yellow/orange.
A must-see lake!

This art musuem is well worth a visit, it is hidden just off the plaza, 5 min walk from the train station. It has some outstanding originals from Swiss (Hoddler), German and Austrian painters. Casa Console has been loving restored however you will need to walk up 4 flights of stairs - it will Keep you fit - spend an hour and then go and have a coffee and ice cream in the plaza. Thereafter go and look behind the church, San Vittori Mauro, where you will see hundreds of skulls stacked behind a wrought iron fence.

This well-preserved bit of history in downtown Poschiavo exists because it was inhabited continuously over the centuries. The sisters who resided there were finally coaxed out by the local government in the late 90's, and it then became a protected historical artifact. It was closed for a month when we arrived, but our hosts called, and we returned after lunch to a warm and welcoming guide. Others had joined us, and, unfortunately, as we were outnumbered, the tour was conducted in Swiss-German. However, our hosts did a good job translating for us. It was amazing to see and experience such living conditions (the residents were very poor), and the un-sanitized authenticity (climbing up and down and in and out of rooms that would never pass in the U.S.) We learned so much and loved every minute of the 1 - 2 hour tour, which passed very quickly. (Not ADA accessible.)

Some of the best views on the Bernina Express train line are from here. There is also a cafe with hot drinks and more to keep you going.
