The 7 Best Things to Do in Dipkarpaz, Cyprus

February 21, 2018 Janette Largent

Rizokarpaso (Greek: Ριζοκάρπασο [locally [rizˑoˈkar̥paso]]; Turkish: Dipkarpaz) is a town on the Karpass Peninsula in the northeastern part of Cyprus. While nominally part of the Famagusta District of the Republic of Cyprus, it has been under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus since the partition of the island in 1974. Rizokarpaso is the farthest eastern territory in the EU.

We did not explore the beach ourselves but the view from the Monastery gate was simply stunning! From there it is easy to spot the access road.

Cape Apostolos Andreas

Reviewed By periwinkleMarlow_UK - Marlow, UK

We visited this attraction recently, but was disappointed as the church was surrounded by scaffolding and building works were being carried out. We were told that there would be an official opening of the site on 7th November? As with many things in Cyprus I am not sure how accurate this opening will be or will there be a delay? However, if you are planning a trip to see the church I suggest you leave it for this trip, as with the amount of work still left to do, I doubt very much that the 7th will take place. There are donkeys around, which would make the trip less disappointing, especially if you have food for them. There is also the little market stalls, which sell touristy knick knacks - I am not sure though why most of them sell the same items! There is also a little cafe where you can get a soft drink or coffee.

Church of the Holy Trinity

Reviewed By Andrew S - Bournemouth, United Kingdom

If you stay in the Glaro Garden Hotel, you will be woken by the church bells at 6.30 AM on a Sunday We walked across the road and joined the old Greeks for the service.
We put 20 Euros in the tray and lit candles, the service finished at 9.00 and then the Turkish police man who was present throughout the service took the money on the tray which made me feel sad so I gave the priest another 20 Euros in his hand afterwards. I am not interested in the rights and wrongs of the past as both sides did terrible things but if Turkey wants to join the EU then they have to allow Christians to worship without fear.
Please try to visit this church on a Sunday Morning and support the ageing population

This is the second year that renovations have been underway as it is a major rebuild and renovation of the beautiful church. It will be well worth a visit when it is completed. The tourist stalls of nicknacks from Turkey have taken over the path down to the sea.

Karpaz Tractor Safari

Reviewed By dippersgirl - Dipkarpaz, Cyprus

If you want to see the hidden face of Karpaz, why not have a Tractor Safari. You start at the Damla Restaurant, Dipkarpaz (which we found easily with the village map provided with our booking) on a tractor & trailer. The trailer had cushioned seats & a sunroof and cold water was available at all times.. The first stop was the beautiful old Byzantine church of Agios Philon near 'Oasis'.. This is a very picturesque place with some lovely old mosaics. The Safari then takes you up into the Karpaz mountain ridge where your first stop is at 'Yellow/Red Rock'. This is a most curious rock formation & we are still waiting for a geologist friend to tell us the origin of it. You are served freshly made Turkish coffee there & then move on along the spine to the very old and tiny mountain church of Agios Philon of Agridhia with some hidden icons. The view up on the ridge is stunning. You see both sides of the coast & on a clear day even the Mountains of Turkey. You travel through wonderful countryside, with the chance to see donkeys, some with young, indigenous birds like francolin, red legged partridges, birds of prey and if you are lucky a hoopoe.
For lunch, served to you at a table & chairs, you stop close to a lovely little beach. Pakize & Bülent served excellent homemade food & ice cold drinks. Pakize's Bulgur Köfte are not to be missed. Here you also have a chance to swim in a beautiful part of the sea. Rock tombs/houses and ruins from the ancient city of Ourania can be seen. You may also see the local goatherd bring his large herd of goats to the fresh water spring nearby. He comes riding on his donkey & if you are keen, you have the opportunity to have a little ride. On your way back you visit another of the ancient cities, Afendrika with its old Byzantine churches. If you feel adventurous you can climb down into the old crypt & even an area that is reputed to have housed prisoners & an escape tunnel. This story is general gossip in the village and needs to be verified.
Then it's back to the Damla for a final drink.

Aphendrika

Reviewed By Steph9WP - Spalding, United Kingdom

Aphendrika was one of the largest cities of Ptolemaic Cyprus, but now just the ruins of three later churches. It's right out on the edge of Cyprus, following on from the decent roads through Dipkarpaz and onto little more than a track to the churches. Worth a look around.
