Rozafa Castle

Reviewed By GoranWembley

Rozafa Castle is this big fort overlooking the rivers of Bojana and Drim, Lake Shkodra and the town of Shkodra. Beautiful views stretching from the Adriatic Sea into the Albanian Alps as well deep into the Montenegrin distant Mountains beyond the largest lake in Balkans.

Lezhe Castle

Reviewed By xhoi1 - Washington

Take the bus or furgon from Tirana to Skoder. Get off at the bridge in Lezhe. You'll see the castle up on the hill. Walk across the bridge into town, turn left and visit Skanderbeg's burial church. There's a bathroom there. Then walk up the hill, you'll find a road, and hike up to the castle. You can drive all the way up if you have a car. I've been there several times and there are never any tourists there, usually just some local youth there for fun with their friends. The views are amazing. The stone castle is fun to walk around and imagine who built it and what life was like living there. Unkempt and not modernized.

Komani Lake

Reviewed By Globetrotter045 - Haacht, Belgium

If you are visiting the north of Albania, don't miss it. The scenery along the lake is stunning. So just take one of the boats and enjoy the beautiful nature. It can easily be arranged from your hotel/guesthouse and it is cheap. I left in Shkoder at 6:30 in the morning with a minivan to Koman, then the wonderful 2 hour ferry to Fierze, another minivan to my guesthouse in Valbona where I arrived at 13:00. I paid only 15 € for the whole trip !!

Shkodra Lake

Reviewed By Ciaran32 - St Helens, United Kingdom

My wife and I visited here on an excursion organised by GLOBTOURS, based in Budva, Montenegro. The scenery is simply stunning and easily rivals our own Lake District although on a smaller scale. It is extremely picturesque and a good spot for bird watchers. We thoroughly enjoyed this excursion even though it was quite a long trip from our base in Montenegro.

Skenderbeg Tomb

Reviewed By Hiboubou-fr - Grenoble, France

Lets be honest. This tomb is just the remains of the former Cathedral (only four walls left) which hosts a statue of Skanderbeg and an Albanian flag. Nothing more, nothing less. If for some reason you stop in Lezhe, go have a look. Otherwise, not worth it I'm afraid...

Kruja Castle

Reviewed By Aburel - Bucharest, Romania

The trip was part of the social programs of the conference. The site is nice, quaint, well kept and instructive. Visiting the decades old Skanderbeg Museum you can learn a lot about country’s feudal times and about the local icon ruler of the 15th century. Continue with the ethnographic museum, which is basically a house of the ottoman general ruling the fortress. Very instructive too. End the trip with a meal at one of the nice restaurants onsite.

Theth National Park

The “National Park of Theth” lies in the center of the Albanians Alps, between the block “Bjeshket te Nemuna” on the west, and the block of Jezerca yon the east. Thethi is a tourist – alpinist region and it is the most important one north of the country. It is only 70 km away from the city of Shkodra. It is a part of the commune Shale within the region of Dukagjin. The park is surrounded from all four angles with pitons (rocky) of the two blocks above, which ascend down towards the valley and create an amazing view. Some of the most astonishing parts of this national park are the following: The peak of Radoines (2570m), Arapit (2217m), Paplukes (2569m), Alise (2471m) etc. Hanging 750–800 meters below within the valley stretches the pictorial village of Theth.

From Theth Village everywhere you turn offers jaw-dropping, gorgeous alpine scenery. The gray karst (limestone) crags jut sharply up from the valley floor toward the crisp, blue sky. Icy streams rush past the rock-strewn banks in their hurry to reach the sea. This rugged landscape shaped the lives of the very, very few people who still live here year-round. It’s a paradise for hikers; biologists might glimpse wild brown bear, boar, wolves, lynx foxes or hedgehogs. Photographers and artists like me dream of wild, faraway places like this with mountain flowers dotting the landscape. If you have good luck with the weather you can capture a quaint stone church with its spire reaching toward the peaks and its foundation parked amid a carpet of wildflowers. Take good shoes, warm clothes, lots of water and plenty of jerky if you dare to hike the marked trails.

Marubi National Museum of Photography

Tucked away on the pedestrian mall is this architectural gem. Although the front desk man was grumpy and unhelpful the displays and collections were fascinating. It tells the history of photography but also the many changes in Albania. They are lucky to have this collection. Reasonable ticket price, allow an hour.
